Back on the mainland, Charley shares two incidents that cause trouble at camp. Post-war, he enrolls at the University of Honolulu and meets his wife. He is the first in his family to graduate from college.

Charley and his wife have three sons together. However, one son passes away from a car accident at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. Before going overseas, Charley is threatened by a plantation field supervisor. Charley has a desire to confront the man after returning home from the war. He shares how he handles the matter. ]]>

Charley discusses the different ways German places and makes their mines. He explains when they go out to combat areas to clear the mines it depends on the purpose.

When the war ends, he is assigned to Ghedi Airport in Po valley, Italy. Depending on how many points you have, you can travel. However, Charley did not have that my points. He recalls waiting a long time until he can be shipped back home.

After leaving Italy, Charley goes to the mainland to Camp Myles Standish in Boston and Camp Kilmer in New Jersey before going home to Kauai, Hawaii. ]]>

The 232nd demographic is composed of Nisei from the Hawaii National Guard roster, transfer soldiers from the mainland, and 442nd. Charley shares stories from the Gothic Line and the rescue of the Lost Battalion in France.

Although Charley is in the 232nd Engineering Company, he says it is rare for an engineer to encounter combat. He recalls two separate incidents when he faces German soldiers in Italy doing reconnaissance work. ]]>

Ken recalls his wife Masuko and life with their children, Westley Paul and Judith Ann. Ken hopes his children to live a good life and enjoy every moment.

In August 1946, Ken returned to the United States, and he took a short road trip to San Francisco before going home to his parents in Richmond. Ken met his wife while she was working in San Francisco. Ken and Masuko got married on June 8, 1952, and have two children and a grandson.

Ken had several jewelry businesses before working for American Airlines in the instrument department. Ken worked for American Airlines for 35 years. Ken had many diverse friends. He believes having a common interest brings people together.

Ken's first battle was on Mount Fogarito. In the Headquarters Platoon, Ken did various assignments. One job was to be a litter-bearer and carry the wounded soldiers off the battlefield. Ken discusses the risk of being a litter-bearer. His friend Tom Nishimoto died when he was a litter-bearer carrying Captain Cassey down the mountain.

Another job was escorting POWs down the mountain. Ken, Norbori, and Chizuo Uyeda took the POWs down and were attacked by mortar shells. They were not hit, but one of the POWs was wounded.

After Mount Fogarito, the Company marched into Carrera, Italy, and he recalls the townspeople were happy to see them. Ken was in combat with the German soldiers for several weeks until Genova.

Post-war, Ken was assigned to ship the German POWs back to Germany. The group was divided into two modes of transports truck and train. Ken and his men were on the train convoy, and they had to watch 400 POWs.]]>

Ken received his draft letter to report to Fort Douglas when he was 18 years old. From Fort Douglas, he boarded a troop train with 40 others to Camp Blanding for basic training. Ken was assigned to the 232nd Battalion.

After completing 16 weeks of basic training, he visited his family in Topaz before going overseas. The voyage was ten days, and Ken was seasick. Ken recalls his good friend, Tom Nishimoto. Tom was KIA, and Ken made contact with Tom's sister, Lilly, after 50 years.

In Marseille, he joined L Company. Ken boarded a landing craft ship on an overnight trip to Leghorn. For three-night, they practiced night marching. On the fourth day, General Clark gave a pep talk to the soldiers before they left for the frontlines in Azzano. The next day Ken was going to attack Mount Fogarito.

Ken's father immigrated to the United States from Fukushima-ken, Japan, to help his family financially. In Sacramento, he worked in the rice field and a cannery. After saving enough money, he opened a delicatessen store in Downtown Sacramento. Ken's mother was a housewife who cared for seven children (five boys and two girls).

Ken grew up in a farming background in Sacramento. He enjoyed being outdoors, playing with his friends, and watching movies. The family moved around several times before setting in the Bay area.

Before the Pearl Harbor attack, Ken had aspirations to graduate High School and attend college. On December 7, Ken was at home listening to the radio when he heard the news about Pearl Harbor.

When Executive Order 9066 was signed by the President, Ken's family evacuated from their residence. Ken and his family went to Tanforan Assembly Center. He described the living conditions and life at Tanforan before going to Topaz, Utah.

Tanaka recalls meeting his wife Helene in New Haven and getting married. Tanaka and Helene have two children and grandchildren. During he retirement, Tanaka does volunteer work at the court, yard work, and picking up grandson.

Hawaii is a big part of Tanaka's life since this is his childhood home. Tanaka has watch Hawaii change from prewar to post-war. In 1959, Hawaii becomes a state and there is a big celebration. Tanaka says this opportunity for growth will make the economy better for the Nisei and open the land for new development.

Looking back at war time, Tanaka's memorable experience is working with the Australian team. The worst part is being hospitalization and missing out on the occupation of Japan. He shares advice for the future generation and how his upbringing contributes to his experiences in life. Tanaka also shares photographs from the war; law school and family.]]>

During Tanaka's time of service, he recalls writing to family and sending them post cards when he is on furlough. On one of his correspondence, he receives news his first cousin dies in action.

Tanaka remembers his homecoming being quiet since he was in the hospital. He says his transition is different but he adjusted quickly. After graduating the University of Hawaii in, he applies to law school. After graduating from Yale, Tanaka takes the bar exams and passes and works for a Federal District Judge as a law clerk.

Going from Camp Shelby to Camp Savage, Tanaka recalls the different styles of training. At Camp Savage the training is more concentrated study of the Japanese language versus physical training at Camp Shelby. At Camp Savage, he is place in section 31 after his exam. After completing his training, Tanaka gets two weeks of furlough. He travels to Chicago, New York, and Buffalo.

Tanaka soon goes overseas to Australia on the USS America ship. When he lands, he goes to Allied Translated and Interpreted Section (ATIS) and takes an exam. He is teamed up with the Australian Team for translation. He recalls two different instances as a translator during interrogation with Prisoners of War in New Britain and New Guinea.

At the University of Hawaii, he does not sign up for ROTC, though it was required to for his first two years. When Pearl Harbor is attack, Tanaka recalls sleeping and thought the attack was a military exercise. After the attack, Tanaka's Father builds a bomb shelter and classes at the University of Hawaii were suspended . Tanaka decides to join the Hawaiian Territory Guards and the Varsity Victory Volunteers (VVV).

When the VVV disbanded, he decided to wait to volunteer. At this time the Japanese Americans are labeled as enemy aliens and are unable to serve. When the Japanese Americans were allowed to serve, there is an overwhelming response to volunteer for the formation of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team.

March of 1943, Tanaka goes to Schofield Barracks for basic training. Tanaka recalls not attending the send off at Iolani Palace because he has the mumps.

When Tanaka arrives at Camp Shelby, where he was assigned to the 232nd Combat Engineer Company. Then he received orders to goto Minnesota for Military Intelligence Service (MIS). ]]>

Tanaka's Mother is a picture bride. She passes away in 1939 when Tanaka is eight years old. His Grandfather moves in to take care of the kids when the Father is working. He recalls corresponding with his girl cousins in the Philippines. When Japan occupies the Philippines, they keep the girls because they know English. They eventually get sent to Japan when America invades the Philippines and took over.

Growing up in Hawaii, Tanaka describes the neighborhood as camps, family run stores, and no restaurants. He says people mainly eat at home and he does not recall eating out. At home, Tanaka's meals consist of rice, pork, and vegetables. The community is mainly Americans of Japanese Ancestry so he did not experience discrimination. Tanaka attends Japanese Language school from kindergarten to 12 grade. He learns the language, loyalty to the country, being good kids, reading and writing.

Tanaka graduates high school in 1939 and is part of the Hawaii Territory Guard. He recalls after pearl Harbor is attacked, the ROTC is called to guard bridges. When Marshall Law is declared, Governor Emmons and other people in power did not feel Americans of Japanese ancestry guarding the territory and deactivated the Japanese Americans who served in Hawaii Territory Guards.

The Japanese Americans still wanted to service their county and some teachers formed a Moral Community. The Moral Community with the boys petition to form the Triple VVV - Varsity Victory Volunteer. Between 150-160 Japanese American boys sign up. Tanaka joins and is sent to Schofield Barracks for one year. The VVV is disbanded when there is an anticipation of volunteering for the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Tanaka recalls his duties and rank in the VVV.
