An account of the resource
Matsukawa talks about his family background, including his mother and father coming over from Niigata prefecture in Japan. As the terrain of Utah was very similar to Niigata, the family would end up settling there. Next, he talks about the communication methods he had with his Japanese-speaking parents, as he really only spoke english. He also talks about the Nisei generation and how the younger generations have no knowledge of what the Niseis went through. After this, he talks about the American concentration camps and the tough living conditions that they had there. He also talks about his whereabouts during the attacks on Pearl Harbor, living in Los Angeles and having to move back to Salt Lake City.

Description
An account of the resource
Matsukawa begins the interview with an introduction of what it was like to grow up in Salt Lake City, Utah. While living there, he would go to school and enjoy the playing sports. As it was the Great Depression years, his family would only have one family car and not even have a radio until later in his childhood. While in high school, Shigeru would be elected as a student body officer, and he would end up playing football and basketball at East High School. Next, he talks about how the Japanese Americans had to learn to compensate for their small stature by being competitive and finding ways to overcome their height. After this, he gives a brief family background and talks a bit more about Salt Lake City's nihonmachi.

Description
An account of the resource
Ito discusses the aftermath of Pearl Harbor and the pressures of war hysteria. It was during this time that he was drafted into the Army and selected for Military Intelligence Service (MIS). He was sent to Fort Snelling to take Japanese language courses, spending hours at a time studying after class ended. Next, he was sent to Fort McClellan in Alabama, where he would experience the discrimination and segregation of black civilians and soldiers. After that, he would be sent back to Fort Snelling before being shipped overseas to begin interpreting in Philippines. Once he arrived in Manila, he immediately noticed the stark poverty throughout the city and was even told to not feed the civilians. He would begin his work, and would be put on assignment to interpret the war crimes trials, including cases such as General Yamashita and General Homma. From there, Ito would be transferred to Japan.
