Description
An account of the resource
While attending regular school during the weekdays, Kawagoye would also attend Japanese language school on the weekends. He would be lucky to have some very impactful teachers during this time, and was always regarded as a good student. Next, he talks about his whereabouts during the Pearl Harbor attacks, and would head home but life would resume as usual until the Executive Order 9066 came around. Luckily, his family was invited to another Japanese families farm in Nebraska, where they would be able to avoid going to the camps and continue working. He would keep up with news of the war on the radio, and when hearing of the heroics of the 442nd and 100th regiments, he decided he would join the Army as well. He would join at Fort Douglas, and be sent to Camp Blanding to begin his basic training. While training, he would be placed in the Military Intelligence School in Minnesota, and they would get word that the war had ended both in Europe and in Japan and his services would end after a year. He would be discharged and use the GI bill to continue his education at the University of Chicago, in which time, he would meet his future wife. They would go on to adopt two children and live happily in California.

Description
An account of the resource
Kawagoye begins the interview talking about his family and how they immigrated from Kagoshima to Los Angeles. It was in Santa Monica that his father would first open a restaurant, followed by becoming a gardener in the West LA area. Mitsunori would attend both regular schooling, as well as Japanese language classes, involving himself in glee club. He would spend a lot of time at the piers in Santa Monica and Ocean Park, finding a deep interest in movies and reading at a young age, that would shape his life going forward. Though he was the only Japanese in his school, he would rarely see discrimination, and would enjoy his childhood, often being near celebrities.

Description
An account of the resource
Kodama talks about his shipment overseas following his basic training at Camp Blanding. He would get on a liberty ship and head for Southampton, thinking they would meet up with the 442nd in Belgium, but instead they would join up at Sospel, France. There, he would get his assignment to be a runner for Headquarters. The next campaign would be to break the Gothic Line, which they would do in just a half hour whereas, no other division was able to break it in two years. He gives a couple of stories about his assignment as a runner and talks about the brutalities of war, including seeing dead and wounded soldiers. After the Gothic Line, they would go to Genoa, where German soldiers were surrendering in mass. The unit would interrogate the prisoners of war at Ghedi Air Base, which would spell the end of the war.

Description
An account of the resource
After the evacuation, Kodama and his family would head to Santa Anita race track where they would spend some time in a temporary detention center, where they would have almost no privacy. It was there, that he would meet his first wife, who taught him how to dance. He also talks about riots that also occurred and the restrictions they had because of that. After this, they would be moved to Heart Mountain concentration camp, where living conditions were also poor and the weather was cold. As he became angry towards the Army, he decided to become a no-no boy but would later decide he would only join if drafted. Later, while working in Chicago, he would be drafted into the Army and begin his basic training at Camp Blanding.

Description
An account of the resource
Kodama discusses the feeling he had that Japanese Americans were limited in their activities during his childhood, including dances and sports. He had hopes of attending UC Berkeley and was originally accepted but was later rejected and would end up gardening instead. He talks about his knowledge of the wars overseas, and hearing that the USA and Japan would fight one another eventually. Next, he talks about being at a basketball tournament in San Jose, when he first heard of the attacks on Pearl Harbor. Soon after, they would get an evacuation notice and have to sell off their belongings or give them away. They would be sent to Santa Anita race track for temporary detention, saying "shikata ga nai" to their situation.
