During the Great Depression, his family moves to Los Angeles because Yenari's Father believes there will be more opportunity to work in the health instrument field. He recalls his childhood and the neighborhood in Los Angeles.

Growing up Yenari plays baseball, golf, and pole vaulting. In high school, the class he enjoys the most is cooking. Due to the Great Depression, He does not play sports in high school. Later in life he weight lifts and pole vaults. Yenari shares his experience competing in in national competitions.

On December 7, 1941, Yenari is working fruit and vegetable stand and a week later is let go. He changes several jobs until time for forced removal. During preparation for Santa Anita Temporary Detention Center, Yenari's Father build four boxes to storage their personal belongs and gave them to a Jewish family to watch after it. Yenari's family is fortunate to have their items return to them after camp. At Santa Anita, Yenari's family stays in a horse stable and eventually moves to a bungalow due to his brother's disability. ]]>

In camp, Yenari does not want his Issei parents to be ostracize if he volunteers for service. Therefore, he waits until he get to Chicago to write a letter to Camp Savage to volunteer. Yenari is enlisted at Fort Snelling and is inducted in December 7, 1943. He describes patriotism and the curriculum at Military Intelligence Service Language School (MISLS).

When Yenari goes overseas to Manila, he is one of the few who receives a weekend pass. He describes the devastation of Manila from the war and have two opportunities to eat meals with civilians. When some of the Hawaiian soldiers go on leave , Yenari volunteers to go to Okinawa as a paratrooper and he receives the brown star. ]]>

Yenari earns money by selling candy and earns the name "sour ball boy". Before coming back to the United States , Yenari goes on furlough for three weeks to see the different prefectures of Japan. When Yenari returns home, he goes to school and opens an Optometrist practice.
