Description
An account of the resource
In 1959, Frank S. Tanabe joined the United States Civil Administration of the Ryukyu Islands with Headquarters (USCAR). Frank was part of the Public Affairs department as an Information Supervisor/News Writer. Besides his work, Frank proactively created programs with other media members in Okinawa and government officials.
Frank explains returning of territory (taken in battle) and USCAR's key role in rebuilding Okinawa. Moreover, Frank gives credit to the Military Intelligence Service (MIS) during the occupation.
From 1959 to 1972, Frank worked for USCAR. After USCAR dissolved, Frank stayed in Okinawa and joined the Navy Command as a Public Affairs Officer (POA) from 1972 to 1986. Frank recalls President Eisenhower's visit to Okinawa in 1959 and the bad public relations afterward.
After 1986, Frank retired. He resided in Seattle for ten years before moving to Boise, ID. In 2001, he moved to Hawaii to live with his daughter, Barbara. Overall, Frank said his Public Affairs Officer career in Federal Service was rewarding and discussed other Nisei's contributions to occupation in Japan.

He continued his passion for writing at Tule Lake by starting Tulean Dispatch newspaper. In September, he went to Idaho to work on a farm picking apples. He recalls experiencing discrimination on the way to the farm.
After the apple harvest, Frank returned to Tule Lake to teach literature at a high school. Frank has not seen his parents in a long time and asks for a transfer to Minidoka. In February 1943, Frank arrived in Minidoka and got a job offer in Chicago.
In December, Frank volunteered for the Army and was inducted. Frank went to Camp Savage and then Fort Snelling before going overseas. Overseas, Frank went to India and then to the Occupation of Japan.
In October 1945, Frank and George Iwataki went to Okinawa. Franks was assigned to Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) and tasked to take the 77th Infantry Division Language Team to Sapporo. Eventually, Frank was discharged at Zama and was recruited by Allied Translator and interpreter Section (ATIS) as Department of Army Civilian.
Later, Frank worked for the International News Service (INS). When Frank worked for INS, he worked with Warren Iwataki. Warren worked at the copy desk, and Frank was a reporter. Frank recalls his tenure at INS and the highlights of his career.

Frank S. Tanabe was born on August 10, 1919 as Shinichiro Okamoto. His parents immigrated to the United States from Japan and later divorced when Frank was a child. Frank's mother married Mr. Tanabe in 1924. Frank and his sister grew up in the Tanabe household and changed their last name from Okamoto to Tanabe.
After the divorce, Frank's biological returned to Japan and opened an American-styled restaurant called Olympics Restaurant. Many Nisei who studies in Japan would gather at the Olympics.
Frank's parents taught him to study hard, and education was important. At home, Frank spoke Japanese and English. He attended Bailey Gatzert Elementary School and Japanese language school. In 1937, Frank graduated high school, and his family moved to Montana. After high school, Frank attended the University of Washington until Pearl Harbor.
Frank recalls the Pearl Harbor attack and evacuation. Frank and four other Nisei were sent to Tule Lake as the advance crew to set up the camp.
In September, Frank went to Idaho to help harvest the crops on a farm. Then he returned to Tule Lake and asked for a transfer to Minidoka.
In 1943, Frank volunteered for the Army and took his physical exam. Frank explains why he joined the Military Intelligence Service (MIS) because of a directive from the War Department. On February 1, 1944, Frank reported to Fort Sheridan and later went to Camp Savage.

Riess discusses his free time in Japan and how his time in Japan helped his future career path. Next, he talks about visiting Hiroshima and Nagasaki after the atomic bombs and how manufacturing in Japan took off after the war for companies like Honda and Toyota. After that, he speaks about the occupation in Japan and the ability to attend the war crimes trials while there. Following his time overseas in Japan, Riess would come back to the United States and use the GI Bill to get his business degree from Harvard and the day before his graduation he would wed his wife. Following college, he would force his way into Ford International where he would happily work for 17 years.

Description
An account of the resource
Riess discusses more about his father's background, including the legacy that he left in both Greece and the then Czechoslavakia. On trips back to those YMCA's, his father is still remembered by those that were there when it was first built. Next, he speaks about his reactions to the American concentration camps, saying people in Hawaii were outraged by the Executive Order 9066. Next, immediately after his 18th birthday, Riess would volunteer for the Army, going to Fort Lewis. During his time there, the war officially ended and he was sent to Japan to work at General MacArthur's headquarters in the chemical core. While there, he would see the Japanese civilians, visit various parts of Japan and clean up chemicals from the war.

Description
An account of the resource
Riess begins the interview speaking of the background of his mother and father and the international upbringing that he had. Being born in Thessaloniki, Greece, his family then moved around Europe and the United States until finally settling in Hawaii. There, Riess would learn a new culture and make a lot of new friends from various ethnic backgrounds. Next, during his high school years, he would experience the Pearl Harbor attacks while living in Honolulu, watching planes overhead and even seeing a bomb being dropped and plane shot down just blocks away. After this, he would speak about the aftermath of Pearl Harbor, including martial law, war preparations and having blacked out nights. He also speaks about a refugee "sister" that his parents had brought over from Austria and the efforts of German nazi's in Greece.

Description
An account of the resource
Uesato continues his discussion of his time in occupied Japan. During this time, he was an interpreter for political analysts who were trying to get as much information as they could regarding Japan's population in politics. In this way, Uesato was able to make a lot of direct impact on the Japanese government, including involvement with the first general election that Japanese women got to vote in. Other than politics, he was also able to uncover some information on his brother that had been stuck in Japan after Pearl Harbor. Unfortunately, he found that he had passed away after contracting malaria. Uesato continued his interpreting in occupied Japan until he decided that a college education would be more important than a steady job. He would, however, end up coming back to Japan quite often as a purser, spending time in both Japan and San Francisco, where he would meet his future wife.

Description
An account of the resource
Uesato discusses his assignment in Burma, where his team would be in charge of opening back up the Burma Road. Next, he would head to China where he would get the rare chance to be around elite military leaders, including Mao Zedong of China and many others. He would continue interrogating and translating until he had enough points to discharge. However, he decided to extend his time with the Army and head to occupied Japan, where he could both work as a good will ambassador and search for his brother that had been stuck in Japan after Pearl Harbor. Uesato gets the rare sight of seeing Hiroshima after Pearl Harbor from his airplane and discusses the devastation of Tokyo and the sad sights of the Japanese civilians.

Description
An account of the resource
Uesato begins the interview speaking about his family background, including his mother and father. Next, he talks about keeping up with the wars overseas and how unexpected the attacks on Pearl Harbor were. Living in Hawaii at the time, they were close to the action but were fortunately unharmed and although his father was questioned occasionally, he was never imprisoned. Following this, Uesato was drafted into the army and began his time with the Military Intelligence Service at Camp Savage in Minnesota. Following his language training, he was shipped overseas to India to begin interrogations in New Delhi.

Description
An account of the resource
Fujimoto talks about his family background and his childhood, growing up in southern California. Next, he speaks about his self identity and what it was like to grow up being a Japanese American, amongst a neighborhood of caucasians. Next, the attacks on Pearl Harbor occurred, followed by the Executive Order 9066 and it's effects. Fujimoto remembers that he thought it was unjust to have this happen, especially the camps, but in retrospect, it may have been for the best. He and his family would be evacuated to the Tulare assembly center and then the Gila River concentration camp. He would then volunteer for the Army and join the Military Intelligence Service (MIS), and be sent overseas to the Philippines where he would begin his assignment interrogating prisoners of war. Next, he talks about his time after the occupation, going to USC and getting his degree in civil engineering, which he would go into after graduating. He would then settle down, marry and have children.

Description
An account of the resource
Fujimoto begins the interview with the surrender of the Japanese Army and the end of the war. As he was already in the Philippines, they would begin the military occupation in Japan shortly after. He would get over to Tokyo by ship and begin his assignment as an interpreter. When arriving in Japan, Fujimoto immediately saw the kindness of the Japanese citizens and how different they were from the Japanese soldiers. A colonel would seek out Fujimoto and assign him to go throughout Japan, starting in Hokkaido, and talk with Japanese civilians about various topics. Next, he looks through a photo album, talking about meeting General MacArthur's wife and son. Next, he would head back to Tokyo and begin a job working at the front desk of the Daichi hotel.

Description
An account of the resource
After the passing of Ray Mayeda's mother, Ray's father sent his two sisters and younger brother to live in Japan with their grandmother. Later, Ray's father and Ray went to live in Japan too. After living in Japan for a few years, in 1939, Ray returned to the United States.
Ray attended Coronado High School and got good grades. He credits his education in Japan for doing well in high school. In addition to Ray's academic studies, he was elected student body treasurer and ran track. Ray was popular with his peers and had many friends.
On December 7, 1941, Ray's life changed when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Many of Ray's friends treated him differently at school, and Ray was forcibly removed to Santa Anita Assembly Center and then to Poston, AZ.
Ray relocated alone because his father was in Crystal City, Texas, and his older brother volunteered for the Army in 1942. Life in the camp was tough, and Ray had to care for himself.
Ray graduated from high school in the camp and left Poston to work in Chicago, IL. Soon after, he found a better job working as a bookkeeper. Ray saved enough money to attend the University of Minnesota, and when his finances ran low, he volunteered for the Army.
Ray started his career as an auditor working in Japan at the Civil Censorship Detachment (CCD) during the occupation. Next, he was a translator in Tokyo civil service and Okinawa civil service. Ray's second time in Japan was with the Air Force Audit Agency and working around Asia. When Ray retired, Northrop offered him a job and traveled to Korea, Saudi Arabia, and various states in the United States for auditing.
In Ray's retirement years, he enjoys playing golf and going on cruises. Ray has been married to the love of his life for 57 years and has three children and three grandchildren. Ray hopes his grandchildren have a good education and a job they enjoy. For the future of America, he hopes there are no more wars.

Ray had many Okinawan people working with him to spread propaganda about democracy in Okinawa. Ray screened movies and documentaries around different towns in Okinawa. Afterward, Ray started renting out regular American films, and his job was to control that.
When Ray did not have work, he found time to visit friends and his siblings. Ray has not seen his sisters and younger brother for 11 years. He reunited with his sisters and brother in Kagoshima and helped them come back to the United States. One of Ray's sisters got married there. After the war, Ray's father returned to Japan.
After serving his time in the occupation, Ray was discharged from the Army and censored telegrams in Osaka. Ray met his wife. His wife was working for the CCD in Tokyo and kept in touch. In March 1950, Ray worked in Okinawa and later returned to Tokyo in October 1951 and married his wife in June 1952.
By 1952, Ray was in Japan for five years, and he returned to the United States with his wife. Ray continued his education at the University of Minnesota, majoring in accounting. He later worked for a CPA firm, and then the Air Force Audit Agency hired him. Later Ray and his family moved to Japan, and Ray audited contracts in various places in Asia.

Description
An account of the resource
When World War Two ended, Ray Kuniteru Mayeda attended the University of Minnesota for a year, and his finances were running low. Therefore, he decided to volunteer for two years and enlisted when he was in Chicago. Ray went to basic training at Camp Lee, Virginia, and joined an integrated unit.
As a child, Ray lived in Japan for a few years after his mother passed away. He learned how to speak and about Japanese culture in his formative years. In 1947, Ray went to Military Intelligence Service Language School for six months.
After completing the Military Intelligence Language School, Ray went to the occupation in Japan and landed in Yokohama. He went to Camp Zama and then to Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS). Ray waited for a month at ATIS to get his permanent assignment before going to Maizuru.
In Maizuru, Ray interpreted for the doctor and translated documents the POWs wrote. When he was not working, he made friends and traveled. Ray also visited his uncle who was a famous photographer.
After Maizuru, Ray went to Mie-ken on a four-month temporary duty assignment. His duty was to surveillance the black market activities on staple foods. Ray was an interpreter and translated when the Japanese police spoke to the locals. He was the backup for the Japanese police.
