Mr. Hayashi begins the interview by discussing a few aspects of wrestling including how he learned his wrestling skills, what it was like being a state champion, and putting on fake wrestling performances for the Forty & Eight Club. Mr. Hayashi next talks about what he was doing on the day of the Pearl Harbor attack and how the city reacted towards the Hayashi's, being one of Grand Junction's few Japanese- American families. Mr. Hayashi concludes by speaking about attending Colorado Mesa College, where he was a member of the student council.

An account of the resource
Mr. Hayashi describes attempting to enlist into the Army, where he was initially rejected. He went on to look for work in Utah, eventually landing job at the Utah Power and Light Company in Salt Lake City. After finding out about the Nisei military unit at Camp Shelby, Mr. Hayashi enlisted in the Army to join the outfit. Mr. Hayashi concludes by discussing his initial thoughts about Camp Shelby and describes his assignment in the platoon.

Description

Mr. Hayashi describes his experiences during basic training, discussing his relationship with the Hawaiian soldiers, his weapons training, and the camaraderie amongst his troop. His battalion was shipped out from Newport News, Virginia and landed in Naples, Italy. Mr. Hayashi describes his ride across the Atlantic on a liberty ship and later his first experiences with live enemy fire.

Description
An account of the resource
Mr. Hayashi offers several stories about his combat experience throughout this section. He first describes the German 88mm artillery gun and being fired upon by it. During this battle, Mr. Hayashi encountered his first American casualty, which had a profound effect on him. Mr. Hayashi goes on to describe other combat situations, including being wounded and nearly shot by a German sniper. Mr. Hayashi concludes by discussing his unit's movement into France and the Maginot Line.

Mr. Hayashi talks about his service throughout France, particularly in the Vosges Mountains region and some of the experiences he had during combat. Mr. Hayashi also describes some funny and memorable encounters including his being mistaken for an officer and his favorite was to prepare his K-rations. Mr. Hayashi discusses the morale of his unit after facing heavy combat in France. Soon after this, the unit would return to Italy to join up with the African American 92nd Infantry to help with the offensive campaign. Mr. Hayashi goes on to discuss the differences between Hawaiian and mainland soldiers and talks about V-E Day. Returning home to Grand Junction after the war, Mr. Hayashi talks about meeting his first wife and his career in real estate.
