Next, he discusses his awards and achievements from the war, including a purple heart, a bronze star and two citations. He would head back to Hawaii, where he would begin his career as an auto mechanic, ending his career with Datsun. He would meet his wife and now has grandchildren. He finishes with some final notes and talks about the legacy of the Nisei.

Oura discusses more about the discrimination he saw while in Mississippi and the struggles between the Hawaiian and mainland soldiers. He also talks about his captain that made a big difference in training them and readying them for battle. He and some friends would go on a furlough to New York before getting shipped overseas to Naples, Italy. He would ship out of Newport News, Virginia, and spend nearly a month zig-zagging across the Atlantic to their destination. He discusses the intricacies of convoying and what it was like during his first days of combat, including seeing dead bodies and climbing through mountainous ranges.

Oura continues his recollection of the attacks on Pearl Harbor and the subtle discriminations that he felt. After this, he decided that he would volunteer for the Army without his parents knowing. However, he was told the quota was filled, but fighting to join the Army, he eventually was given the okay to serve. After another hick-up at Schofield Barracks, he would ship out to Camp Shelby via the SS Lurline. After a few days about the ship, they would land in San Francisco and train to Mississippi, There, he would begin training with K Company and see a lot of things that he'd never seen in Hawaii, including chiggers, snakes and segregation.

Oura begins the interview talking about how his family came from Miyagi prefecture to Honolulu, Hawaii. His father came to work at the sugar plantation, where James and his siblings would grow up with very little money and food but surviving nonetheless. He would attend both english and Japanese language schools and end up graduating from Kahuka High School. Soon after, the attacks on Pearl Harbor occurred and he remembers seeing a fallen plane and hearing about the attacks on the radio. As he was a boy scout, they were told he would be a messenger if needed.
