Description
An account of the resource
Fukuhara continues his recollection of the time after the Pearl Harbor attacks, and his father being taken in by the FBI. Other than that, things would go on as normal until the Executive Order 9066 was signed. With just a couple days notice, he and his family were forced to take one suitcase each and head to the Puyallup Fairgrounds where they would begin their temporary detention center time. Fukuhara talks about the barbed wire and sad living conditions, including very little privacy. Shortly after, they were moved to the Minidoka Concentration Camp, where they would live in barracks and work for $16 a month. He then talks about the loyalty questions that were given and how he had no loyalty to Japan, so the questions were easy to answer. Later, while attending college in Iowa, he would be drafted into the Army and begin his induction at Fort Douglas.

Description
An account of the resource
Following the Pearl Harbor attack, Shigetoki Tom Umeda does not know what happened to his family in the United States. In Japan, Tom focused on his work at Mitsubishi.
During wartime, Tom worked at Mitsubishi. Tom explained there were no opportunities for Nisei to be an engineer in the United States. To work for Mitsubishi, Tom had to regain his Japanese citizenship. In doing so, he lost his American citizenship.
Tom learned his family was doing ok after Pearl Harbor after receiving a note in a package from his mother. After the war, airmail was allowed between the United States and Japan.
After working at Mitsubishi, Tom worked for a chemical engineering construction company. Later, he received an offer to work for Kenwood. To work in the United States, Tom got his Green Card. For the latter part of Tom's career, he worked for Kenwood in the United States. He retired from Kenwood after ten years. Tom also went to Oak Ridge, the Secret City to discuss atomic energy.
Tom describes the different chapters of his life, from growing up in the United States, working in Japan after college, and returning to the United States to work. Being a Nisei helped him after the war. Japanese companies wanted his ability to speak English and Japanese. Tom also learned the business as a Nisei and as a Japanese. He felt fortunate to be accepted as a Japanese and a Japanese American.

Description
An account of the resource
Shigetoki Tom Umeda's mother helped coordinate the interview with Mitsubishi for Tom. After the interview with Mitsubishi, Tom got the job. He describes how Mitsubishi was two sections for the Army and Navy. There was six other Nisei employed at the company who wanted to use their engineering experiences. Tom and the other Nisei decided to work from Mitsubishi because they could not find an engineering job in the United States.
Tom recalls talking to the man who created the aircraft department at Mitsubishi and how he collected data from American aircraft to construct the zero fighters.
Tom worked in the Navy section on zero fighters. His assignment was the 6th and 7th versions of the landing gear. Tom describes creating and getting approval of the landing gear design.
He designed the landing gear with the philosophy of not using a dead weight. His goal was to make the landing gear as durable and light as possible. After several trials, Tom succeeded with his calculations.
However, the war ended, and Tom's design did not make it in time.

An account of the resource
Chiye Hayashi Watanabe, Henry M. Hayashi, and Seiichi Nakawatase discuss the Medal of Honor and the process of getting Joe nominated. The process with the War Department takes several years until Joe is approved.

Description
An account of the resource
Fujimoto continues his recollection of Pearl Harbor and the aftermath of the attacks, including curfews and getting rid of all illegal contraband. Shortly after, they would get notification of Executive Order 9066, which would force them to be moved to an American concentration camp in Arizona. He and his family would be transported there with only the personal belongings they could carry. Once arrived at Poston concentration camp, he would see the poor living conditions including dusty barracks, no privacy and creatures all over the place. He talks about the recreational activities they had there as well, and the loyalty questions that were given to all men. He would end up being drafted into the Army and would be inducted at Fort Sheridan, followed by basic training at Camp Maxey. However, during this time, Victory over Europe occurred and he would be moved to Fort Snelling to begin Military Intelligence Service. While there, Japan surrendered and the war ended. Unfortunately, he was called back home with urgency as his mother was sick and would pass away shortly after. He would be discharged from the Army, so he could take care of his little sisters.

He would work for a couple of different firms before retiring and opening up his own firm with some partners, called Westfield Investment Group. Next, he discusses the importance of Japanese Americans serving in the Army and the memorials that have been put up because of it. He also talks about the process of how to get these types of memorials put into place. After this, he talks about his children and grandchildren and gives a message for future generations.
After Jack Nagano's interview is complete, his wife Louise is then interviewed for a short time. She gives a short introduction of her family and how she met Jack. Description
An account of the resource
Nagano continues his recollection of his time overseas during the war. He talks about his experience in a shell hole and seeing people fish with concussion grenades. He would be an interrogator of prisoners of war while in New Guinea and was then sent to Officer Candidate School. After completion of the school, he would head to the Philippines to begin his assignment as an officer at the General Headquarters. Due to the points system, he was offered a chance to go back home, so he would head to Japan to catch a ship home, he would however, have some trouble in finding one right away. He would end up trying to meet up with his sister in Ibaraki and visiting the town of Zama with friends until he was finally able to head home. He would end up in San Pedro, where his brother would pick him up and he would join the Army Reserves before going out to Minnesota to meet back up with his wife.

Description
An account of the resource
Frank Hiratsuka is born July 16, 1926, in Aliso, CA. In the late 1800's Frank's grandparents immigrate to the United States and have eight children.
Frank's grandfather is a farmer, and Frank's father briefly works on the farm until he gets another job. Both Frank's parents work in private homes and live at the employer's home. Frank's parents are hard-working and work six days a week.
During the Great Depression, Frank says life is not difficult because his parents have a stable job. Although his parents are always working, they do have time off to spend with family and friends. Frank says New Year is a festive holiday with Japanese food and family.
At school, Frank's favorite subjects are art and music. He plays numerous instruments from the violin, saxophone to the clarinet. He recalls performing at the World Fair with his school band.
Frank's childhood activities consist of games, marbles, movies, and listening to adventure shows on the radio.
On December 7, Frank remembers listening to the radio and hearing the news broadcast about Pearl Harbor. Frank and his parents and the bus driver from the Japanese School decide to go to Ridley (the safe zone).

An account of the resource
After being moved to Minidoka concentration camp in Idaho, he was drafted into the Army. He would attend his basic training at Camp Landing in Florida, where he would be trained as an infantryman until being chosen to switch over to the Military Intelligence Service in Minnesota. He would report to Fort Snelling, where he would take Japanese language courses for the occupation of Japan. They would prepare to invade Japan, but as the war ended, they were needed instead for occupation work. After shipment, he would land in Yokohama, and receive assignments in both Sasebo and Kumamoto. Though the work was limited, he would get to experience many different things, such as befriending the Japanese yakuza, visiting family and helping children at an orphanage. Next, he talks about the importance of the Nisei linguists to the reconstruction of the country.

An account of the resource
Fukuhara begins the interview speaking about his family background and his father coming over from Japan. At a young age, his mother would pass away, and his father would later re-marry. Growing up in Washington, he had a very diverse upbringing, only having to deal with the local swimming pool not allowing Japanese. Even though, his childhood was during the Great Depression, his father never was out of a job, and he was able to live good life, fishing with neighbors and attending Japanese language school and high school. He would idolize the Japanese soldiers overseas, hearing about their bold strategies. Next, he speaks about Pearl Harbor and how the aftermath would affect he and his family. His father would be taken in by the FBI and moved to Montana.

An account of the resource
At Camp Shelby, Robert Sugimoto learns he is AWOL because there are no traveling orders. He tries to visit his family at Poston. However, Poston is under the Western Defense Command. Although Robert is in Army, he is not allowed to go.
Robert goes overseas to Okinawa. He describes the situation in Okinawa. Robert has to translate documents for strategic worth. He recalls the American Infantry finding a map, but Headquarters did not receive it until later. By knowing the location of the Japanese cannons is the beginning of the Japanese Army's downfall.
In Okinawa, there are propaganda leaflets that cause many civilians to commit suicide. Robert remembers two little girls who lose their mother. Suicides are happening all over Okinawa. Robert also mentions cave flushing. Many of the civilians are hiding in the caves.
Besides translating documents, he works at the POW Camp. He recalls hearing an announcement that Japan surrenders. Before going home, Robert gets a souvenir.
Robert returns to the United States and is discharge at Fort MacArthur, and he reunites with his family in Detroit, MI.

An account of the resource
Kimura would graduate from high school at the young age of 16 and would move out on his own to Waimea in Kauai. He would continue playing baseball and football, but would also work as a carpenter. Next, while practicing for an upcoming baseball game, he would hear about the attacks on Pearl Harbor. Not long after that, he would volunteer for the Army, hearing about the 100th Infantry already drafted. He would head to Schofield Barracks in Honolulu and then to Camp Shelby on the mainland to begin his basic training. While in the south, he immediately saw the racial segregation, at times being called names and being asked to sit at the back of the bus. He would also travel around while taking passes, seeing places like New Orleans and Chattanooga. He also talks about the conflicts between mainland and Hawaiian soldiers and seeing the American concentration camps. Next, he discusses the german weapons that he would have to learn about before being shipped to Europe. He would ship out to Naples in Italy but would first take a furlough and see New York City.

An account of the resource
In the fall of 1941, before the Pearl Harbor attack, Ko Stanley Sameshima, is a student at Cal Tech University. Ko is doing well in his academic studies and is on the Varsity Cross Country Team. In Ko's spare time, he attends social school functions.
Ko discusses the media reports following days after the Pearl Harbor attack. He says the media exaggerated the news to instill fear. However, Ko and his family continue with daily life as normal. The customers at Ko's parents' produce market show sympathy and concern towards the Sameshima family. Ko says there are no signs of discrimination.
When Executive Order 9066 (EO9066) is announced, Ko's parents and himself have separate struggles they face. Ko's parents go to Amache, Colorado, and Ko tries to transfer to a University on the East Coast. On the East Coast, Ko witnesses segregation and shares his sentiments.
Ko graduates from the University of Texas and is reclassified from 4C to 1A. Before being drafted for service, Ko volunteers to be an internee at Amache, to care for his parents. Ko recalls his experience at Camp Snelling and Military Intelligence Language School.
In 1945, the war ends, and Ko is commissioned to go to Manila, Philippines, for war crime trials and then to Tokyo, Japan, for occupation. Ko's parents leave Amache and move to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Description
An account of the resource
William Yoshito Thompson arrives in France and lands in Marseille. William's unit is the 2nd Battalion Head Quarters, which services the Rifle Company. In the Rifle Company, there is E Company, F Company, and G Company (the heavy weapons company). October 15, William encounters his first battle in the surrounding areas of Bruyeres. He talks about the objectives and the turning point of Bruyeres.
Although William's unit is not assigned to the Lost Battalion rescue, he discusses the events and gives credit to his unit for helping to get the Germans out of the Vosges area.
After leaving Southern France, William returns to Italy for the last push at the Gothic Line. He remembers moving fast through the towns. The Rifle Company and William's company are both facing casualties. William's company loses serval men plus their Company Commander. The replacement Company Commander is Nishimura.
William discusses the German surrendering and the end of the war. He leaves Italy in November and returns to California to Camp Beale. From there, he goes on a boat to Hawaii and is discharged from the Army in December.
Post-war, William furthers his education at the University of Hawaii and works for the Water Department for 17 years. He gets married and has four children and six grandchildren.
Furthermore, William talks about the importance of character building, his Issei uncle, and Shiego Joseph Takata. Despite the racial prejudices, the Nisei veterans persevered and showed oyakoukou - bringing honor to their parents and their county.

Description
An account of the resource
William Yoshito Thompson discusses going to Schofield and going overseas to the Mainland to Camp Shelby. At Camp Shelby, William is assigned to the 2nd Battalion Head Quarters and later to the Antitank Company.
There are approximately 10,000 Nisei who volunteers for the 442nd. Williams explains the relationship between Mainland soldiers and the Hawaiian soldiers. William says some factors for the misunderstandings are due to the different cultural up brings, and he provides some examples. Eventually, the animosity between Mainlanders and Hawaiian guys subsides, and they get along.
When William gets weekend passes, he enjoys eating steak and watching movies. Being from Hawaii, William has not experienced or seen discrimination until he goes to the South. He describes segregation and experiencing discrimination at the movie theater.
In May 1944, William ships out of Camp Shelby to go overseas on the Liberty ship. William's older brother volunteers and ships out December 1944 for the Anzio Campaign. His other brother is with the 442nd 522nd Field Artillery Battalion and ships out the same time as William.
Overseas, William's company lands in Naples. He recalls his first battle, the Little Battle (Little Cassino Battle) and the Arno Campaign. William's outfit faces artillery fire when carrying supplies to the front line and bringing the wounded soldiers back for treatment. William's specific task is picking up the injured soldiers. After the Arno Campaign, they go to France and land in Marseille.
