Description
An account of the resource
Hiromi Suehiro begins the interview talking about his family and how they immigrated to Hawaii. His father, coming from Japan, ended up fighting in World War I for the United States, while his mother was born in Hawaii. While growing up, he would take an anti-Japan stance, as a way to make sure his father would not send him there, attending Japanese language school but not taking the exams amongst other things. After high school, he would attend the University of Hawaii while working as a watch maker as well. He talks more about his family and growing up in Hawaii before speaking about where he was during the Pearl Harbor attacks. Living just 10 miles from Pearl Harbor, he would see Japanese planes flying above his home and even seeing debris hitting his neighbors homes.

Description
An account of the resource
Suehiro continues talking about his experiences during the attacks on Pearl Harbor and afterwards, including facing discrimination and seeing the Varsity Victory Volunteers at the University of Hawaii. Hearing about the 100th/442nd forming, Suehiro decided that he too, would volunteer for the Army and would get inducted and shipped off without even having the chance to tell his family. He would be shipped first to San Francisco, and then take a train down to Mississippi, where they would experience more discrimination. He also discusses his father being taken in by the FBI after Pearl Harbor as we was active in the community and had a good education. Next, he talks about his basic training and how he would write to his family throughout his time there.

Description
An account of the resource
Suehiro discusses his mindset during the war, which was readied by a letter written from his mother to not bring shame to his father. This got him to rid himself of cowardice and continue to push on during combat. He would experience this bravery during combat near the Mussolini Canal as artillery shells were landing all around him. He tells a heartbreaking story of a group of soldiers that were sent out during broad daylight by superiors, only to find them fifteen minutes later, all shot. He discusses the hardships of the soldiers and the good men that were lost, especially during the Lost Battalion. Suehiro talks more about combat and the details of the weapons that they and the German soldiers used. He also speaks about the camaraderie between soldiers, and seeing friends get wounded in action.
