Title
Thomas Sakamoto oral history interview, part 1 of 6, June 3, 2001
Description
In this video clip, Thomas Sakamoto talks about his parent's immigration to the United States, where they permanently settled in San Jose, California. As the eldest Nisei son, Thomas completed his middle school education in Kumamoto, Japan, where he learned Kendo and the Japanese language. Due to the militaristic atmosphere in Japan during that time (1930's), he joined the middle school ROTC, but was not inducted into the Japanese military because he was not a Japanese citizen. He goes on to talk about how he was reunited with one of his Japanese classmates during wartime in the Pacific Theater.
