Description
An account of the resource
Sato continues his recollection of being an interpreter and interrogator in the Philippines. When arriving there, he would immediately notice the devastation and flatness that the war had caused. He talks about the children there seeing Japanese American soldiers but thinking they were Japanese soldiers. He would be involved with the war crimes trials, interrogating witnesses. Sato discusses various important people during the war, including a teacher from Hawaii and a spy for the American Army. After the Philippines, he would head back to Tokyo to get his discharge from the Army, but stayed around and would take a job interpreting and interrogating as a civil servant. He would also be involved with the Korean War as a civil servant, interrogating Korean soldiers that spoke Japanese. Then, due to the GI Bill, he would head back to Hawaii to begin college at the University of Hawaii. After this, he gives a background of his wife's family and how they came to meet.

An account of the resource
Sato discusses more about his childhood in Hawaii, playing football and track for Baldwin High School. He also talks about impactful people throughout his high school days. Next, he talks about the attacks on Pearl Harbor and how they had to black out their windows so enemy submarines couldn't see any lights. He would see his neighbor being picked up by the FBI and never came back. After the attacks, they would be faced with restrictions and forced to carry gas masks with them everywhere they went. He discusses the Japanese influences that could be seen within his childhood home at the time, including an obutsudan and attending Japanese language school. He also talks about seeing people volunteering for the Army, including teachers and his cousin.

An account of the resource
Sato and his family would be evacuated from their farm, and moved to a temporary detention center in Puyallup, called Camp Harmony. He talks about the lack of privacy and the barbed wire that surrounded the area. After this, they would be moved again, but this time to a more permanent location at Minidoka Concentration Camp. He talks about the actions that lead to the executive order, including Yellow peril and certain congressmen not getting supported. After this, he talks about being transported by train to Idaho, with the shades drawn, and seeing nothing around at all but mountains. He talks more about the living conditions of the barracks and finding work as a swamper, while attending high school. He would then be drafted into the Army, heading to Fort Douglas for his induction.
