Description
An account of the resource
Henry Kondo, a native of Pasadena, Califonia, was born in 1921 to Yasaku and Kiyome Kondo. He completed two years at the University of Southern California studying pharmacy when World War II broke out. He and his family were forcibly removed into Tulare Temporary Detention Facility. Kondo volunteered for the army in 1943, where he served with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. He was killed in action on October 19, 1944 during the Battle of Bruyeres.
This collection includes letters written by Henry Kondo to his sister Misa (Kondo) Hoshino in 1944 while he was overseas in the European Theater, as well as various photographs from the pre-war period of Kondo and his family, and of Kondo during his military service.

Next, he begins an in depth recollection of Pearl Harbor, from listening in on the radio to seeing the fire ball and smoke from a distance. Hamashige begins the interview speaking about his background growing up in Laie in Hawaii, including his childhood home and foods. Next, he talks about the background of his mother and father, who both came to Hawaii from the Yamaguchi prefecture in Japan. Next, he talks about his values growing up and going to the Japanese language school. After that, he speaks about his 7 brothers and sisters and the things they did for fun while growing up in Hawaii. In order to continue their education, they all had to work in the plantation fields and learn the value of hard work and education. Finally, he speaks about his ration for joining the Military Intelligence Service (MIS).

In this segment, Rose Uriyu talks about her husband, George. She talks about the activities George participated in and how they met through working together. She describes their trips to Tokyo to see the sights of Japan while also visiting family. Uriyu talks about the events in George's life she was not aware of, and she also talks about their wedding day. A special moment she recalls was when the Super Bowl was brought overseas to Tokyo. Married life was not easy in Tokyo, so they returned to the United States. They moved around the country a bit, but finally settled down. She also mentions that George was a cartoonist, and that his work was featured in Time Magazine.

Being an American citizen, Kimura decided to join the service, and he gives credit to his father's advice regarding his decision to enlist. He also recalls high school and an influential teacher before sharing his memories of what he considered doing after high school. Kimura ends by recalling some special memories from basic training.
