Assigned as a forward observer, Mr. Black saw his first action at the Battle of Monte Cassino and described his various duties the position entailed. She never attended Japanese language school growing up, but she always wanted to learn to speak Japanese. Instead, she learned other languages in school, such as Spanish, Latin, French, German and Russian. She volunteered to become an Army nurse, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, but was rejected -- she continuously sent letters requesting for enlistment, until she was finally accepted. She was then sent off to basic training and was assigned to the Halloran General Hospital in Staten Island, and later to Tilton General Hospital.
