Description
An account of the resource
Sameshima and Hayashi are joined by George Hayakawa as they remember Joe Hayashi, who served with the 442nd Regiment and earned a Medal of Honor while in Italy. They talk about various memories of him, including a time during kendo practice, where Joe stood up to the instructor and quit the class on the spot. His anecdotes show that he was a strong-willed individual that are reflected in his actions in the War. Next, they talk about his upgrade to a congressional Medal of Honor and how it was deserved. After this, they speak about the legacy of the Nisei soldiers and the importance of the Issei parents that guided them from the beginning. The three take a look at the actual citation Joe Hayashi was given when awarded the Medal of Honor by President Clinton. They finish by talking about a mounment that was erected by the city of Pasadena and some final recollections of Joe and his funeral.

Description
An account of the resource
Mary Yamada shares a photograph of herself during a bivouac at Fort Dicks. She describes her experience at Fort Dicks, where she treated different patients. She mentions that she was often the first Japanese American that people encountered -- an article was written about her for being the first Japanese American teacher at a high school. During the war, her family was relocated to the Heart Mountain incarceration camp. She knows little of how her family felt during their stay there because they rarely corresponded with her through letters. She also describes the different military decorations she was awarded during her military service.

An account of the resource
Genro Kashiwa talks more about fighting on the Gothic Line, which was the last major German defensive during the European Theater of World War II. When Germany finally surrendered, Genro was assigned to guard the German prisoners of war at Ghedi Air Base in Italy. After receiving the Silver Star for his service, he received enough points to return home to Hawaii. He, then, attended the University of Michigan and became a lawyer. He talks about the contributions of the Nisei soldiers and what their contributions did for future Japanese American generations. At the end of the clip, he shares a typed roster list of his platoon that he made and carried with him during the war.
