An account of the resource
Mr. Estes describes his life growing up in rural Georgia and his decision to join the military following the Pearl Harbor attack. Assigned as a mortarman, Estes moved up the ranks eventually becoming platoon sergeant. Estes was part of the Lost Battalion and discusses the hardships during the platoon's isolation. After being rescued by the 442nd, Estes returned to combat, seeing action in France where he was wounded. Concluding part 1, Mr. Estes describes the war's end and his return trip home.

Hayashsi describes the reunion with his parents and friends on his return to Hawaii and also talks about his marriage and professional career. Towards the end of the interview, Hayashi talks about his Distinguished Service Cross and being upgraded to the Medal of Honor. Hayashi recalls battles in Coli, Italy and Cassino, Italy. After taking medical leave, he arrived back to his company in time for the Anzio Campaign, where he soon received the Distinguished Service Cross. Hayashi recalls his thoughts on the ship from Hawaii to the mainland, unsure of where he was going and the nature of his military assignment. Arriving first at Camp McCoy in Wisconsin, he later was sent to Camp Shelby, where he underwent more basic training. The majority of the second half of the interview describes his trip to North Africa and later Salerno, Italy. Hayahsi discusses the combat he saw with his battalion on his first few days after landing in Italy.

Hayashi recounts his family and childhood growing up on a plantation in Hawaii. He describes working with his parents on the plantation and later jobs he worked to try to make a living wage. Hayashi was drafted into the 65th Engineer Battalion in 1941, prior to Pearl Harbor, and discusses his duties in the outfit. He describes what he was doing the day of the Pearl Harbor attack and the aftermath of the attack. He concludes by discussing his assignment at Fort Kamehameha, before being shipped out from Hawaii.

In this segment, Takemoto discusses his experiences in battle at Bruyères and in the Vosges forest. He recounts the many fellow soldiers who were casualties or killed in action, as well as the young and old German soldiers that were captured or killed and the sympathy he had for them. He then describes the two times he was wounded which resulted in his receiving the Purple Heart, The Distinguished Service Cross, and the Croix de Guerre. He was the sole GI to receive the llast honor, bestowed by the French Government for his heroism,

The 442nd Regimental Combat Team was sent to the Gothic Line, which was the backbone of German defense during World War II. Rudy Tokiwa describes how the 442nd made the advance at night, and it took them two days to overtake it. He talks about his friend, James Okubo -- a medic of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team that served with him on the front lines -- who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Rudy was also awarded a medal for his service while overseas. He describes his homecoming in Salinas after the war.

During this portion of the interview, Thomas Haga talks about his experience moving to Arizona to be with his children. Next, we hear about the medals and honors that Thomas received in honor of his military service. From here, Thomas discusses the legacy that he wishes to impart to future generations. In addition, Thomas offers addition details regarding the bombing of Pearl Harbor, namely where he was during the event. Next, Thomas offers his thoughts on what it means to be an American citizen and lastly, the interview ends with Thomas recalling seeing the Golden Gate Bridge for the first time and how it made him feel. During this portion of the interview, Henry Nakada gives details regarding his brother's military experience and most importantly, how his mother dealt with having seven boys serving in the military. Next, Henry offers a great amount of detail regarding his combat experience at the Gothic Line. Moreover, Henry recollects details regarding German soldiers and how their weaponry differed from that of American weaponry. From here, we hear more details regarding Henry's combat experience, namely the causalities of war and the extent of their losses and how General Dahlquist failed to understand the overall extent. Next, we hear about Henry's occupation post-war, as well as the legacy left by Nisei soldiers.
