Description
An account of the resource
Jerry spent his formative years in Ogden and Salt Lake City, Utah. After he completed high school, he applied to the University of Utah and where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1939. After Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7, 1941, Jerry became heavily involved in the Salt Lake City chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League and, by 1943, he had enlisted in the United States military. He was inducted at Fort Douglas, completed his basic training in Camp Blanding, Florida and then was sent to Camp Savage in Minnesota to brush up on his Japanese language skills. After many months of rigorous language training at Camp Savage and at Fort Snelling, Jerry became an interrogator for the Military Intelligence Service (MIS). Before embarking on his first mission though, he was sent to Fort Lawton in Washington and then shipped out to the Schofield Barracks in Oahu, Hawaii for “jungle training” and additional practice in interrogation methods. Jerry served in his capacity as an interrogator in Leyte, Philippines and then in Okinawa and, finally, in Korea. The war ended while Jerry was stationed in Okinawa and he was sent to Korea where he earned enough “points” to earn a discharge from the military. However, when he reached his quota, he chose to reenlist and was eventually sent to Japan for approximately a ten month period. His new role - which was associated with agricultural research arm of General MacArthur’s headquarters - was to investigate farms, hydroponics and animal husbandry and submit his reports to the U.S. government. He was honorably discharged from service in 1947.

Biographic information from the Japanese American Service Committee Legacy Center Archives

Description
An account of the resource
Hideo Morinaka begins the interview speaking of his family background and growing up in Utah. He would enjoy hunting, fishing and playing football while growing up on a 120 acre farm. Throughout his schooling, he would also be responsible for milking the cows on his farm and was often faced with discrimination. Next, while taking a trip to Los Angeles, the attacks on Pearl Harbor occurred and he was forced to stay at a hotel for a month and half until his brothers were able to come and take them back to Utah. Being that they lived in Utah, they were not forced to live in an American concentration camp, but in 1944 was drafted into the Army. Morinaka would head down to Camp Blanding in Florida to begin his basic training before being sent over to Germany for military occupation.

An account of the resource
Hayashi continues his recollection of interpreting assignments in Manila, working at the War Crimes Trials. After this, he was discharged from the Army so that he could continue his college education, but decided to travel the East Coast first. He would finish his degree at the Colorado School of Mines and begin his career working as a surveyor and an engineer. Next, he discusses his marriage and family background and becoming an ordained Buddhist minister. He would also take up calligraphy and begin teaching that to students. After this, he discusses his interest in Japanese culture and how living in Japan for two years has really taught him a different perspective on things and how he enjoys passing those on to other generations and people.

Description
An account of the resource
Hayashi begins the interview speaking about his family background, being born in Denver and what it was like to grow up there. As a child, he would have the chance to live in Japan and would do so for two years, learning all about the Japanese culture and language that would aid him for the rest of his life. He discusses going to Fort Lupton High School and also attending Japanese language school at the same time. Next, he talks about hearing news of the Pearl Harbor attacks on the radio and wanting to join the Air Force, but was rejected. Instead, he would attend the Colorado School of Mines, studying electrical engineering. However, later he would end up getting drafted into the Army and being placed with the Military Intelligence School (MIS). He would report to Fort Snelling and be placed in the advanced class, where after just six months, he would be shipped out to Manila to begin his assignment translating and interpreting. He discusses working in both Manila and Australia, and being involved with the War Crimes Trials and interrogating prisoners of war.
