Description
An account of the resource
Mr. Black discusses his childhood growing up in southern California and his involvement with the Methodist church and orchestra. Mr. Black recounts his hearing the news of the Pearl Harbor attack and how he viewed Japanese-Americans at that time. Soon drafted into the Army, Mr. Black discusses his marriage shortly before being shipped out to Fort Leonard Wood for his basic training.

Description
An account of the resource
Mr. Black talks about his trip across the Atlantic, where he landed in North Africa and was eventually deployed to Salerno, Italy. Assigned as a forward observer, Mr. Black saw his first action at the Battle of Monte Cassino and described his various duties the position entailed. After joining the Lost Battalion as a replacement, the group became trapped in the Vosges Mountains. Mr. Black describes the conditions while trapped and discusses the rescue operation by 442nd. Following the rescue, Mr. Black was evacuated, suffering from dysentery and hepatitis, and taken back to the United States.

Description
An account of the resource
Mr. Black briefly talks about his illnesses which led to his evacuation to the United States and his subsequent discharge from the Army. He next describes his life after his military service, including attending college and his career in the trucking business. Through his job with the trucking company, Mr. Black made friendships with many Japanese-American veterans. Mr. Black has been a supporter of the Japanese-American cause following World War II, as well as a supporter of several veterans organizations. Mr. Black concludes by talking about his sons' own military careers and visiting the Go For Broke Monument.
