His family took in three orphans and they became a part of their family. He describes growing up among different ethnic groups and social classes around the plantation community. During his childhood, he and his friends used to be trouble makers -- he describes an instance when they were caught trashing a local school. Being the eldest/first son of the family, he tended to receive special treatment in comparison to his sisters. His father, although a man of few words, epitomized Japanese cultural values, and was highly respected by his family.</text>

At Washington Intermediate School, he was a part of an extortion case, in which a fellow student tried to force him to give him money. He also talks about his experience in music class, where he regretted his decision to play the violin. Instead of participating in American sports at school, he practiced Judo and Kendo. <text>In this video clip, Yoshiaki Fujitani continues to talk about his time at McKinley High School. The teachers at McKinley made a positive impact on his life, even encouraged him to take public speaking classes. He describes his identification as a dual citizen and Japanese American. While he was attending McKinley High School, he also attended a Japanese language high school. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Hawaii. During his second year at the university, the bombing of Pearl Harbor took place on December 7th, 1941.</text>
