<text>Masato Yamashita's interview is with Lloyd Fujitani.

Masato Mauch Yamashita is born on December 27, 1924, in Lodi, CA. Lloyd Katsuto Fujitani is born January 1, 1917, in Lodi, CA. Both Masato and Lloyd are with 442nd Company I. Masato, and Lloyd's parents are from Japan.

Masato and Lloyd's parents are hard-working and care for the family. They both grow up in farming communities. Masato lives in Lodi, CA and Lloyd lives in Acampo, CA. They live 20 minutes away from each other.

Although Masato is an only child, his cousins live nearby, and he has neighborhood friends to play with him. Lloyd is the oldest child in his family, and he has one brother and a sister. Growing up, Masato and Lloyd do not experience discrimination. However, when the war starts, Masato experiences racism.

At home, Masato speaks Japanese, and his parents instilled in him to be hard-working and honest. Lloyd's parents teach him to be hard-working, honest, and Christianity. Masato and Lloyd recall their school years. They both love sports. Masato plays baseball, and Lloyd plays football.

On New Year, Masato and Lloyd's family go to each other's homes to eat. Masato and Lloyd say their mother cooks very well. On occasions, Masato goes to watch movies. He recalls some of his favorite cowboy actors. </text>

He discusses the Japanese influences that could be seen within his childhood home at the time, including an obutsudan and attending Japanese language school. His father would work for various places while his mother would volunteer as a midwife to those in need at the Buddhist church. Growing up in Seattle, Oye would take both Japanese language school and regular school, while making friends and playing baseball. His favorite subjects were algebra and painting and he would play baseball, even getting to go down to Tacoma for a game. Next, he talks about his high school days, working at a salmon cannery in Alaska during the summers and working as a waiter at a country club until the war broke out. He discusses the Japanese Americans that broke curfew and were taken in by law enforcement. </text>

Next, she talks about her childhood home and the various things she was involved with as a kid, which included such things as skating, going to the movies and playing sports. As she was one of the more talented basketball players at the time, she would be captain of the team and would end up winning the championship in her league. It was after one of these basketball games that she would find out about the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Originally she and her father had planned to go to Japan after she graduated from high school, but the war changed everything. With heavy restrictions and curfews, she was forced to remain with her family much of the time, until her father was taken in by the FBI and moved to San Francisco, then to New Mexico. </text>

<text>Janet Nakakihara and Janice Trubitt say their grandmother is big on celebrating New Year and birthdays. Janet recalls her mother mentioning her mother adopted all of the American holidays and celebrations. Even though they did not have much money, they still celebrated special occasions.

A special event in the family is when their grandmother becomes a naturalized American citizen in the late 1950s. Janet believes their grandmother wanted to be a citizen because of Sadao.

Janice explains why her family lives in Hawaii. After Manzanar, Janice's mother finds a job in Madison, WI, as a surgical nurse. In Madison, she meets Janice's father, Albert Yokoyama, who is in the 100th Battalion. When Janice's parents get married, they move to Hawaii.

Janice recalls her mother having happy stories about Sadao except for the one about the community swimming pool. Janice explains her feelings on oral history. </text>
