Hiroshi "Hershey" Miyamura oral history interview, part 4 of 5, July 24, 2004
Hiroshi "Hershey" Miyamura recalls the battle at the Yellow River with the Chinese soldiers and North Korean soldiers. There were many casualties on both sides.
On April 24, the Chinese assaulted Hershey's squad, and he gave orders for his men to withdraw. Hershey covered for his men to escape. He was wounded and captured by the Chinese soldiers. At the POW camp, Hershey describes the living conditions he endured for 27 and a half months. He did not get proper nourishment, medical attention, and warm clothing. To avoid wood cutting detail, Hershey became the barber in camp.
In 1952 the peace talks started, and the names of the POWs were released. He received the Medal of Honor for his actions in the Korean War. The Medal of Honor changed many aspects of Hershey's life, and he spoke at many events. As a fellow American of Japanese ancestry, Japanese Americans are just as dedicated to the United States as any other American. Hershey felt the training and his fellow soldiers helped him, but there was a higher being that guided him through the war experience.
Hershey was not religious when his mother passed away. However, he returned to his faith and religion helped Hershey get through his war experience, POW life, and post-war.

Hiroshi "Hershey" Miyamura oral history interview, part 3 of 5, July 24, 2004
Hiroshi "Hershey" Miyamura describes his state of mind and feelings coming back from the war.
Post-war, Hershey went to school on the East Coast for engineering. At Christmas break, Hershey returned home and worked for his cousin for a few months. Hershey started dating Terry, and they got married.
When Gallup fell into a depression, Hershey's paychecks got smaller. In June 1949, he decided to reenlist for three years. The following year the Korean War happened, and Hershey went to duty in August 1950.
Hershey went through a nine-week refresher training session at Fort Hood, Texas. Then he went overseas and arrived at Camp Drake in Tokyo, Japan. Hershey was taken by train to the southern island of Kyushu. He joined Company H, 2nd Battalion, 7th Regiment, 3rd Division.
When they landed in Korea, there was snow on the ground and light artillery fire from the North Koreans. The countryside was not modernized, unlike Seoul. Hershey recalls his first engagement with the locals and their living conditions.
The locals were starving, and the American soldiers did not get the best food either. The terrain prevented the American soldiers from getting their supplies. Hershey lived off C rations for three to four months.
In the Korean War, Hershey was promoted several times from Squad Leader to Corporal and then Sergeant. He had 12 men and four riflemen under him. Hershey recalls losing men because they wanted to go home or were transferred to other units.

Uesato discusses his assignment in Burma, where his team would be in charge of opening back up the Burma Road. Next, he would head to China where he would get the rare chance to be around elite military leaders, including Mao Zedong of China and many others. He would continue interrogating and translating until he had enough points to discharge. However, he decided to extend his time with the Army and head to occupied Japan, where he could both work as a good will ambassador and search for his brother that had been stuck in Japan after Pearl Harbor. Uesato gets the rare sight of seeing Hiroshima after Pearl Harbor from his airplane and discusses the devastation of Tokyo and the sad sights of the Japanese civilians.

Konoshima begins by speaking about his time in occupied Japan. After spending time in the American concentration camps, he would be shipped to Tokyo as part of the Headquarters team. When arriving in Tokyo, he would remember the destruction of buildings but as it was around 1950, much was changing. He would also be able to visit family that was in Gifu and see the black market. After about a year in Tokyo, he would be assigned to be an interrogator in Korea. In his experience, he did not notice any animosity from the civilians or the prisoners of war that he interrogated. Next he discusses the military occupation as a whole and how the implementation of Constitution and democracy would shape Japan's government. He also talks about the timing of American soldiers needing to be moved out of Japan after a certain point so that Japan would be able to reconcile themselves in due time. In later years, he would return to Japan as a writer for a newspaper and note the changes that he saw each time he came back.

Sukeo Oji oral history interview, part 5 of 7, May 26, 2002
Sukeo "Skeets" Skeets recalls the saddest part of the war was seeing political prisoners' dead bodies. He never forgot the smell of the bodies. The American troops advanced to the 2nd Infantry Division; Skeets received orders from the CIC to form an engineer task force.
During the Korean war, Skeets faced challenges in battles with the enemy soldiers and interrogating POWs. He recollects before going to Sunchang, the troops had to go through a mountain road and were under artillery fire. The 2nd Division had a heavy loss of men and could not continue. Therefore, they had to recuperate for a month waiting for replacements.
Besides combat, Skeets interrogated the officers and non-combats. However, there were too many of them. Skeets recalls getting Chinese POWs in Korean uniforms. With the dilemma, McArthur Headquarters went to Chiang Kai Shek to find a Chinese linguist.
Skeets was called back to the 8th Army in Taegu to start an Interrogation Poisoner of War Training School at Army Prison in Pusan. Skeets picked about 20 Niseis from the frontline for 2 weeks of training. The training consisted of map reading, interrogation, and how to evacuate POWs.
The Niseis practiced their interrogation skills on the POWS at the 8th Army Compound. The interrogation later moved to Pusan. After Skeets conduct about four classes of interrogation training, he received orders to go to Japan. Skeets wanted to return to the States. However, linguists were needed.

Mori continues his discussion on cave experiences while serving overseas in Okinawa. Following Okinawa, he is moved back to the Philippines until the end of the war. After thinking they would be sent back home after the atomic bombs, they are instead routed to Hokkaido in Japan, where he would spend time in Sapporo. Next, he talks about interpreters who had bodyguards and communication back to his family in the states. Mori gets discharged out of Zama and sent back to the United States, where he and his family would try to find a place to settle, moving to California, then Hawaii, and then eventually back to Santa Barbara. He then talks about his family, including his two brothers that also served in the Army.
