Araki continues his discussion on his assignments in Japan, working in Tokushima and helping to translate and interpret during the military occupation. Next, he talks about the black market during the occupation and how the big cities were the only places where they really thrived. He was also asked to teach democracy in schools and would also learn a lot about how business was run throughout Japan. Next, he speaks about the earthquake that hit Tokushima and the aftereffects of it, including constant tremors and a tidal wave. After this, he speaks about Japan's economic rise and how their business ideals worked in their favor to create lasting corporations. He talks about the Military Intelligence Service language school that he was involved with in Hawaii and how they have not received recognition as the mainland language schools have. He finishes by admiring the occupation of Japan and giving praise to General MacArthur.

Riess discusses more about his father's background, including the legacy that he left in both Greece and the then Czechoslavakia. On trips back to those YMCA's, his father is still remembered by those that were there when it was first built. Next, he speaks about his reactions to the American concentration camps, saying people in Hawaii were outraged by the Executive Order 9066. Next, immediately after his 18th birthday, Riess would volunteer for the Army, going to Fort Lewis. During his time there, the war officially ended and he was sent to Japan to work at General MacArthur's headquarters in the chemical core. While there, he would see the Japanese civilians, visit various parts of Japan and clean up chemicals from the war.

Uesato continues his discussion of his time in occupied Japan. During this time, he was an interpreter for political analysts who were trying to get as much information as they could regarding Japan's population in politics. In this way, Uesato was able to make a lot of direct impact on the Japanese government, including involvement with the first general election that Japanese women got to vote in. Other than politics, he was also able to uncover some information on his brother that had been stuck in Japan after Pearl Harbor. Unfortunately, he found that he had passed away after contracting malaria. Uesato continued his interpreting in occupied Japan until he decided that a college education would be more important than a steady job. He would, however, end up coming back to Japan quite often as a purser, spending time in both Japan and San Francisco, where he would meet his future wife.

Fujimoto begins the interview with the surrender of the Japanese Army and the end of the war. As he was already in the Philippines, they would begin the military occupation in Japan shortly after. He would get over to Tokyo by ship and begin his assignment as an interpreter. When arriving in Japan, Fujimoto immediately saw the kindness of the Japanese citizens and how different they were from the Japanese soldiers. A colonel would seek out Fujimoto and assign him to go throughout Japan, starting in Hokkaido, and talk with Japanese civilians about various topics. Next, he looks through a photo album, talking about meeting General MacArthur's wife and son. Next, he would head back to Tokyo and begin a job working at the front desk of the Daichi hotel.

Tony Koura oral history interview, part 3 of 3, January 17, 2010
When Tony Koura goes back to Japan after the occupation, the locals have changed. The people have money, there is no food shortage, no one is starving, and every one is employed. There are thousands of linguists during the occupation. Tony says the Military Intelligence Service (MIS) put in a lot of contributions.
Tony recalls his friend, Stan Kizawa, who worked in the Civil Censorship who is instrumental in saving the Kabuki Theater. In the occupation, Tony's role is mainly intelligence collection. The reason linguists are spread out through the different prefectures, Japan, is to assist the Japanese Government and Police with keeping the Communists under control.
The Nisei Linguists have more of an advantage for the locals to trust them over a white people who can speak Japanese. The locals want to make friends right away. Moreover, sharing the same culture is helpful in the mission.
The Japanese locals are accustomed to democracy. Therefore, when General MacArthur preserves the Emperor System and democracy after the war, he is well received. Democracy is established in Japan after the Meiji Restoration in 1868 (approximately) until the Military System takes over in the 1930s.
After the occupation, Tony works in a few positions in the military. Before retiring, he is Chief Historian of the Pacific Command. At the end of the interview, Tony shows a photo of him and the Captain Scientist "Chief" he accompanies in Japan occupation.

Muranaka goes through his work in the Army after the end of World War Two, where he served in the Korean War. Next, he discusses the importance of Nisei soldiers during the occupation of Japan, and how big of an impact communication is in order to keep everyone on the same page. With many differences in culture, language and upbringing, Muranaka worked hard to make Japanese soldiers feel at ease while interrogating them. As many Nisei soldiers were also doing similar work, it became key to have skilled linguists in occupied Japan.

Following the Turlock, Ichikawa and his family were moved to the Gila River Concentration Camp, where he saw posters showing that the Army needed military volunteers who could speak Japanese and work as interpreters. Once approved, Ichikawa was shipped out basic training at Camp Shelby and then started his overseas work in Australia doing interrogation. The MIS took him from Australia to Manila, where he recalls fieldwork that brought him to a group of Japanese soldiers that were reluctant to surrender. Next, his team was moved to Japan on commission work, where he would end up getting married. Ichikawa was discharged and moved back to California to start his fruit farming business again, but was recalled in 1950 for the Korean War, forcing him to give up his farm once again.

Shigeo Iwamasa oral history interview, part 2 of 3, September 11, 2007
In Berlin, Shigeo Iwamasa is assigned to be a driver. He describes the experience driving through the bombed cities in Germany. In Koblenz, there is a distinctive smell due to the dead bodies under the building rubbles. The bombed cities in Germany are like ghost towns.
On a lighter side, Shigeo shares a funny story about the Mess Hall in Marseilles, France. Besides Shigeo serving in the army, his three other brothers have a military career as well. Shigeo's Issei father is very proud of his sons for serving their country.
While overseas, Shigeo says there is a Black Market. He says some hot items go for high prices. As a result, the Army passes a ruling that you can exchange items only 10 percent above your Army pay.
On December 18, 1945, Shigeo is discharged in Oahu, Hawaii, and returns home to Maui. Shigeo is not able to find a good job and reenlist in the Army. He is deployed to the Korean War and is a Battalion Mechanic.
After being discharged from the Korean War, Shigeo is highly decorated with serval awards and medals such as two combat badges, two good conduct medals, and one Bronze Star.
Post-war, Shigeo goes to National School in Los Angeles, California for a year. Eventually, Shigeo gets a position at Northrop Grumman and is promoted several times before retiring.

Julian Quayles oral history interview, part 3 of 4, September 8, 2007
Julian Quayles' interview is combined with Ray Wells.
Julian Quayles discusses what happens after he escapes from the German soldiers. Julian with another Officer, finds shelter on an Italian civilian's property until they can rejoin the American lines. Julian does not reunite with the American troops until mid-October.
Ray Wells and his Company are training until their next action. They move to Mount Rotondo. Ray discusses the attitudes of the civilians. Food is scarce during the wartimes.
At Mount Rotondo, everyone in Ray's squad is hit by artillery fire. Ray is hospitalized for several weeks. During his recovery, he meets General MacArthur and Hideichi Shimabukuro from the 100th.
When Ray receives news about his brother, he goes AWOL but returns to the frontlines. After recovery, Ray attaches himself to G Company (rifle company) and goes to San Pietro, Italy.
During this time, Julian and his troops are in Monte Cassino. After Monte Cassino, Julian is Battalion S3 (Plans and Training Officer). He is promoted a few more times throughout the European Theater when the higher officers are killed in action.
Even though there are many losses of soldiers from combat, Julian says the morale remains the same. Replacements are brought in to help with the men killed in action or wounded in action.
In Rome, Julian remembers there is a lot of marching. The Germans have set up a few diversions for the American soldiers such as roadblocks and Middle Eastern soldiers to help on the ground. Julian recalls before Monte Cassino, he is sitting on the mountain and watching two British Army soldiers.
Both Ray and Julian discuss the German weapons, mines, and observations planes.

Paul Bannai oral history interview, part 3 of 8, September 15, 2002
When Paul Takao Bannai hears the news of Pearl Harbor on December 7, his reaction is to help and defend the United States. Paul's parents support him and encourage him to defend America. By joining the 442nd and serving with the Military Intelligence Service (MIS), Paul shows his patriotism and loyalty to the United States.
After training, Paul goes overseas. In New Guinea, Paul and fifteen Nisei MP and set up a POW camp. His job is to interview the POWs. The next step for General MacArthur is to set up the next landing spot in the Philippines.
General MacArthur's next landing is Leyte Islands. Paul and the MP set up the POW camp for interrogation. Paul recalls the capture of a Japanese sergeant, and he gives the locations of the cannons fired at night. Besides the POWs intel, Paul's team gets the radio signal of the Japanese soldiers and hears their conversations. Paul recalls the Japanese Navy attack and saving the Japanese soldiers from the ship.

Paul and the Australian Army travel to Borneo because there are still many Japanese troops in that area. Paul remembers a case of interrogating a Japanese soldier in the hospital who is a Nisei drafted into the Japanese Army.
In Borneo, there are snipers, and Paul is assigned guards for protection. One of Paul's guards is shot by a sniper, and he tries to save him. Paul is awarded a medal from the Australian government. However, that medal is only awarded to Australian soldiers, and Paul returns the medal.
Paul stays in Borneo to assist with the surrendering ceremonies. After the surrender ceremonies, Paul goes to Manila, Philippines, but his unit leaves for Tokyo, Japan. Before going to Tokyo, Paul flies to Okinawa with other soldiers to help them with trade translations. In Tokyo, Paul learns he is promoted to second lieutenant if he serves during the occupation forces. However, Paul turns down his commission. Paul recalls visiting Kyoto to visit relatives.

Kosaki begins the interview speaking about his childhood and schooling in Hawaii, attending Japanese language school in Waikiki. Next, he jumps into his whereabouts during the attacks on Pearl Harbor. After spending some time at the University of Hawaii, Kosaki decided to volunteer for the Army, and in 1944 was inducted and sent to Fort Snelling for Japanese language training. He would train here until being shipped overseas, first to Manila, then to Atsugi Air Force Base near Tokyo, where he would discover the devastation that the war had brought Japan. He noticed the dispirited looks on civilians, from poverty and food shortages and was amazed at the culture during the military occupation.

Ishimoto continues his discussion on the importance of Nisei linguists during the military occupation of Japan. He talks about the various campaigns and things that the MIS had to deal with, that were much more than just interpreting and translating. Next, he talks about what made the occupation successful and how that can be translated into future occupations, the most important piece being that you need to understand the culture from their perspective. He also talks about some of what he saw from the Japanese citizens, as far as food was concerned, taking the trash from the Army mess halls and presumably eating the scraps. He finishes with some experiences he had in Japan, including seeing General MacArthur, and dealing with discrimination.

After joining the Army, Hirano is sent to Camp Savage in Minnesota to join the Military Intelligence Service Language School. From there he was assigned to work in New York, translating words for a dictionary that the Army was putting together. It was there that he also had a piece of the Manhattan Project, writing up the treaty. Also during this time, he was received a controversial piece of propaganda that nearly got him in trouble. Fortunately, he was not found guilty and went on to be an instructor at Camp Savage before getting shipped out to Manila. In Manila, he worked as a translator right next door to General MacArthur until he received new orders to head to Japan.

Nakasone talks about the reactions to the Japanese attacking the Americans at Pearl Harbor and the effect that it had on his family. His parents understood that they would be seen as enemy aliens after the attacks but also understood that their children were Americans and would have to do their duty for their country. At this time, the Japanese language school and regular school would stop and everybody would have to work on the pineapple fields once a week. Next, he talks about receiving his draft notice and his thoughts on going to Japan. He would head to Tokyo and join the Allied Translator and Interpreter Section at the NYK Building. He talks about various experiences, including traveling through Japan and interacting with Japanese civilians. He also talks about what it was like in Japan during the occupation, seeing small food rations for the locals, General MacArthur's leadership and the impact of the Japanese American soldiers.

Nakamura talks about his finishing with Japanese language courses in Monterey and his quick furlough in Hawaii to spend some time with his family and prepare to go overseas. He would head overseas, stopping in multiple countries en route to Yokohama. He would eventually arrive at Camp Zama and head to Tokyo. On his way, he would notice the complete devastation of Tokyo and see the poor living conditions of the local civilians. While in occupied Japan, he would be involved with interrogations and translations of prisoners of war, some of them being caught for engagement in the black market. After this, he talks about his travels through Japan, seeing family in Hiroshima and Fukuoka and trying to speak with the Japanese civilians but often not being understood well enough.

Kurokawa continues his discussion on what it was like to be in Japan during war times, including activities that were available during that time such as watching sumo wrestling. He also speaks about the living conditions, food shortages and propaganda on the radio. Next, he recalls the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the military occupation of Japan. Then, in 1946, he would head back to the United States where his mother would find work in Pennsylvania and he would complete his high school degree. After spending a year at University of Hawaii, Kurokawa would enlist in the Army and head to Fort Ord in California to begin his basic training. After his completion of basic training he was given the rank of private and would get ready for his next steps.

Kaneshiro gives some final notes about Rohwer Concentration Camp, including how they received news of the 442nd, recreational activities and where to go after the war had ended. Once he had left Rohwer and back in Los Angeles, Kaneshiro had trouble finding steady work until he saw a poster from General MacArthur asking for Japanese speaking Americans who were interested in volunteering for the Army. After joining the Military Intelligence Service (MIS), Kaneshiro was sent to training, and shortly after to Asia. After finally landing in Tokyo, his team worked to interrogate Japanese prisoners of war to try to extract secret information. After 5 years in Tokyo, a few men, including Kaneshiro, were sent to Korea during the Korean War to extract information. After a few months there, he returned to Tokyo where his wife waited for him.

While at the Topaz Concentration Camp, Kimura would see Army recruiting teams, looking for Japanese speakers to join the Military Intelligence Service (MIS). He would volunteer and pass the tests, giving him a sense of patriotism and a reason to get out of the camps. He would head to Camp Savage to begin his language courses, studying all day long. They would all learn the Japanese language, along with interrogation techniques and obtaining tactical value. He would graduate from the training program and then head back to Fort Snelling for a short time, and then to Camp Shelby for a crash course in basic training.

While on one of his errands at the Tsukiji Fish Market, he helped resolve a miscommunication between an American GI and a Japanese laborer. The Japanese laborer had then invited him to meet his father was invited over to their estate. Out of gratitude for his kindness, the Japanese laborer's father gave Kazuo a katana, or Samurai sword, which he is still in possession of today. Kazuo talks about how he was sent home because his father was terminally ill, but by the time he returned home, his father had died. Kazuo describes the purpose of the Nisei soldiers' involvement in the reconstruction of Japan, and his personal experiences during the occupation.
