Enoch Kanaya oral history interview, part 1 of 3, June 25, 2006
Enoch Kanaya was born March 14, 1925. His parents are from Okayama-ken, Japan, and immigrated to the United States. Enoch's parents were hard-working and loving parents. When the Great Depression happened, farming became difficult, and the Kanaya family moved to the city. Enoch remembers taking care of the horses and saving his earnings.
At school, there were not many Japanese American students. The first part of Enoch’s school years was at a country school. After moving to the city, he attended a city school district. Enoch also attends Japanese Language School briefly. On the weekends, Enoch helped his father at the family store.
Besides school and helping his father, Enoch had a carefree childhood enjoying cowboy movies and watching sports games. He describes having fun exploring different Naval ships during Navy Week in Portland. Moreover, Enoch was social in the Japanese Community through the Medothist Church.
On December 7, Enoch’s life changed like many other Japanese Americans. Soon after the Declaration of War, restrictions were issued for a curfew and turned in weapons and radios. Enoch was unsure of the future. In April 1942, Enoch and his family arrived at the Assembly Center. Enoch recalls hearing news about the draft and receiving his 4C card from the Draft Board in Minidoka.

Frank Hiratsuka oral history interview, part 1 of 3, November 21, 2008
Frank Hiratsuka is born July 16, 1926, in Aliso, CA. In the late 1800's Frank's grandparents immigrate to the United States and have eight children.
Frank's grandfather is a farmer, and Frank's father briefly works on the farm until he gets another job. Both Frank's parents work in private homes and live at the employer's home. Frank's parents are hard-working and work six days a week.
During the Great Depression, Frank says life is not difficult because his parents have a stable job. Although his parents are always working, they do have time off to spend with family and friends. Frank says New Year is a festive holiday with Japanese food and family.
At school, Frank's favorite subjects are art and music. He plays numerous instruments from the violin, saxophone to the clarinet. He recalls performing at the World Fair with his school band.
Frank's childhood activities consist of games, marbles, movies, and listening to adventure shows on the radio.
On December 7, Frank remembers listening to the radio and hearing the news broadcast about Pearl Harbor. Frank and his parents and the bus driver from the Japanese School decide to go to Ridley (the safe zone).

Miyahara begins the interview talking about his family background and how his mother and father came over from Kyushu, Japan and settled down as farmers in the Los Angeles area. Growing up in California, he was able to live a pretty full childhood, including attending Japanese language school, playing baseball and beginning his kendo training, which would end up being one of his passions in life. During his childhood, he also would go to a ranch that was owned by the Kelloggs and ride the ponies they had there. During high school, he would become more involved with kendo, and even took a trip to Japan for it. While there, he would experience Japan like a young man would, not noticing much of the differences between there and Los Angeles, but being able to travel all the way up to Manchuria and beyond.

Toyota discusses family religion, secondary school, and going overseas for the European Theater. In Japan Toyota's Issei parents are Buddhist. However, when migrating to the United States, Toyota's parents believe their children should follow the religion of the country they reside in. The Toyota children then attends Sunday School at a Methodist Church. Toyota and four Brothers also attend Japanese School.
During the time of the Great Depression, Japanese School tuition cost $5 a month. Toyota's parents are share croppers and could not own land due to the Alien Land Law. Toyota is at awe that his parents can afford the Japanese School tuition during the Country's financial hardship.
In 1944 Toyota goes to Camp Blanding for secondary training (replacement training). At Camp Blanding, he remembers the visit from the 100th Infantry Battalion and their discussion about their war experience in Italy. As Toyota is getting ready to go onto the troopship overseas, her receives an Army telegram that his Brother is killed in England. Toyota and all his Brothers are close knit.
In France, Toyota's first action battle is at Bruyeres. He recalls the foot assault, mine fields and casualties. The most memorable moment is a wounded soldier losing his leg. At this point Toyota feels that they are extendable. In the European Theater, the German soldiers are know for their weapons and how more superior the guns were to the American soldiers.

Sukeo Oji oral history interview, part 7 of 7, May 26, 2002
Sukeo “Skeets” Oji worked for 42 years in the military and federal civil service. His hard work was due to his parent's upbringing. Skeets' mother was a picture bride who immigrated to the United States. She gave birth to eight children and raised them to the best ability. Although she was busy with household chores, she made time for the kids. Skeets' father was a hard worker and showed him how to be disciplined. The family had some hard times together, but they worked together to thrive. Currently, Skeets works in his garden which reminds him of his father who was a farmer.
One of Skeets' immediate daughters completed school and worked at a successful accounting firm. The other daughter was like Skeets and worked on the personnel side in the military. Skeets' wife's daughters have jobs and a good life.
After their children are all grown up, Skeets and his wife are enjoying being grandparents to their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Skeets discusses a plan for going on a cruise with his grandchildren. Skeets' wife has been a wonderful companion and strength to him. After Skeets retired, they traveled to many places. Skeets and his wife plan to travel to Japan to visit relatives and friends.
Skeets was active with several organizations, one of them being the Military Intelligence Service (MIS). They want to educate others about the contribution of the Niseis during World War Two. MIS has prepared a teacher's guide and a film called Uncommon Courage to teach future generations.
For the next project, they were granted a large fund to establish a website to share over 200 interviews of the Nisei veterans with the public. The MIS Association in Northern California had been established 80 years now. They are planning to restructure the organization not as a veteran organization but as a social organization.

Sukeo Oji oral history interview, part 1 of 7, May 26, 2002
Sukeo "Skeets" Oji was born on February 24, 1918, in Sacramento, CA. He got his nickname Skeets because Sukeo was hard to pronounce. Skeets' father, Ozo Oji, was a hard-working man. He immigrated to the United States by himself from Hiroshima, Japan. Skeets' father found a job working on the railroad but later started farming. Not being able to return to Japan, his father decided to marry a picture bride, Skeets’ mother, Sujino Kiso. Skeets has seven siblings.
The late 1920s was the Great Depression, and everyone struggled to survive. Farmers were making about ten cents an hour. In the 1930s, the family moved to Perkins (east of Sacramento). Their family friend suggested to Skeets' father to venture into hops. However, that venture failed.
During Skeets' elementary school years, he attended Japanese Language School. When the family moved to Perkins, he attended Sacramento High School. He was active in sports and participated in a Nisei football league. In 1936, Skeets graduated high school and applied to Sacramento Junior College after a year of farming.
Living in Perkins, their farm was near a naval air forces base. Skeets recalls seeing the airplanes fly by and aspired to be an aviator and an officer of the United States Army. In early 1940, the United States was preparing for war. A civilian pilot program was offered at school, and Skeets was accepted into the program. After completing the first and second phases, he was waiting for the third phase, instrument flying and long distant country flying. However, Skeets did not complete his training because Skeets got drafted into the Army. On November 6, 1941, Skeets reported to Presidio Monterey for induction.

Takusagawa continues his discussion on growing up in Santa Barbara, including the impactful people that he grew up with, helping him to become a more rounded person. Eventually, this guided him to joining the school band, playing the snare drum, which led him to a very special 21 day trip to Washington DC. Following high school, Takusagawa began to figure out a career path, most likely taking over the dry cleaning business after the passing of his father, however, the attacks on Pearl Harbor occurred. As Executive Order 9066 was posted, the early relationships with neighborhood friends worked in his favor, as his family was able to store their furniture in their homes. Next, he and his family headed to Tulare Temporary Detention Center, where conditions were crude and his family was forced to live in a horse stall.

He then talks about the aftereffects of the attacks, he and his family being forced to head to the Tanforan racetracks, followed by the concentration camps. He discusses the hardships that the Japanese Americans had, and shares his thoughts on "no-no boys".

Saisho begins the interview speaking about his family background and how his father came over to the United States to attend school, and found his mother while working on a farm. He would grow up in various places in California until the attacks on Pearl Harbor occurred. Within his family, there were mixed feelings about the attacks and his mother didn't believe they would be taken into camps. However, with Executive Order 9066, they were moved to Merced Assembly Center and then Granada (Amache) Concentration Camp in Colorado. As his sister was able to get a job permit outside of the camps, Saisho was able to attend high school at Englewood High School and go to Colorado State University for a year before joining the Army. As the end of the war commenced, he would end up being assigned to Fort Snelling in Minnesota to begin his Japanese language training for the Military Intelligence Service (MIS).

Sachio Jack Takata oral history interview, part 1 of 3, June 17, 2006
Sachio Takata was born on March 14, 1923, in Southern California. Sachio's father, Kizo, was from Kagoshima, Japan, and immigrated to the United States. He met Sachio’s mother, Hatsumi, from Hawaii, and they married. Sachio is the oldest of ten siblings.
Half of Sachio's youth was in Southern California and then in Northern California. Sachio enjoyed school. He attended primary school and Japanese Language School. After class, he would go home and help on the farm. Sachio describes harvesting different crops on 70 acres. Sachio grew up during the Great Depression. Although he had many interests, Sachio had to save every penny to buy model airplanes, a photography camera, and parts for the crystal radio set. The nearest town was Stockton, and Sachio watched cowboy movies often.
On December 7, Sachio was working on the farm, when he heard about Pearl Harbor. The following day, Sachio heard President Roosevelt declare war. Shortly after there were travel restrictions and a curfew enforced. Sachio recalls having the mentality of shikata ga nai and not trying to fight city hall. In camp, he did not participate in strikes.
On February 19, 1946, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, and Japanese Americans had to be evacuated from the western area. Sachio and his family evacuated to the assembly center and took what they could carry. At Turlock, Sachio spent most of his time working at the mess hall as a pantry clerk.
