<text>Jumpei "Jumpy" Mine is born on August 4, 1920, in Montebello, CA. Jumpei's father is a hard-working man. Jumpei's mother, Jen Mine, passes away early.
Jumpei grows up in Montebello and helps his father with farming. Jumpei's favorite sport is baseball. He has one sister, Chizuko, and one brother, Kay.

Jumpei discusses his school years from attending Laguna Elementary School in Montebello, high school, and Japanese Language School. His favorite activity at school is sports, especially baseball. During his free time, he rides his bike, goes hiking, and participates in Boy Scouts. On Sundays, he attends Christian Church in Montebello.

In 1939, he graduated high school and continued to help his father with farming. Jumpei recalls the Pearl Harbor aftermath. Jumpei's family goes to Santa Anita Assembly Center when evacuation orders are announced. After six months, Jumpei goes to Detroit, MI, for work, and then he is drafted into the Army.

After basic training, Jumpei goes overseas to Europe. He is assigned to Company D, Heavy Weapons. He shares a story of how his Squad Leader keeps the unit safe from the German soldiers.

When the war ends, Jumpei stays in Italy for three months before returning back to the United States. He goes to Chicago to reunite with his parents. Post-war, Jumpei looks for mechanic work.

He would be assigned to a rifle company, even though he was trained as a heavy weapons expert. After this, they would march to Anzio. While there, he would get his first taste of war, including burying dead German bodies and guarding occupied houses. Next, they would march to Belvedere, where they would attack the German lines from behind, taking many SS troops as prisoners. While this was happening, a German tank would also begin it's attack, but in the end, they would all be killed as well. </text>

<text>Sukeo “Skeets” Oji was at Gila for a short time before attending school fall of 1942. The 442nd formed in early 1943, and in September 1943, Skeets was called to active duty. He went to Camp Shelby, and he was assigned Heavy Weapons.

After completing 16 weeks of basic training, Skeets was Squad Leader to Heavy Machine Guns, D Company. Later he was promoted to Buck Sergeant. In 1944, the 442nd was preparing to go overseas. The 100th was already overseas fighting. The 1st Battalion was shipped to assist, and the non-combats remained behind.

Skeets stayed behind as the 171st training battalion. Before recruits came to Camp Shelby, the non-combats were on guard and KP duty. After 12 weeks of training, a recruiting team from Fort Snelling and Camp Savage came to Camp Blanding. Fall of 1944 Skeets received orders to go to Camp Savage for training in the Japanese language. Skeets was assigned to 1st Class Company, Company G.

In June 1945, Skeets graduated from Japanese Language School and applied for OCS training. Skeets reported to Fort Benning. The war ended in Europe and then Japan surrendered. Skeets was still in OCS. When he graduated, he went to Fort Snelling. Skeets' family was at Gila for four months until they were sponsored to Keenesburg, CO, to manage a farm.

Post-war, Skeet's family moved to Sacramento and established themselves in Yuma City. Skeet's older and younger brothers managed the farm and called it Oji's farm. Now Skeet's older brother's son is running the farm currently.

Skeets went to Fort Snelling and joined the Cadre Company before shipping out to Japan. In Occupation Japan, Skeets was a part of the 142nd language detachment and later the 553rd engineering construction group.

<text>Barney Hajiro was born on September 16, 1916. He was the second oldest of his siblings. He grew up on a plantation in Maui, Hawaii, during the Great Depression.

During Barney's school years, he attended first through eighth grade. He did not have transportation to go to high school. Therefore, after the eighth grade, Barney worked on the plantation weeding the grass and irrigating the sugar crops.

Barney worked hard and never complained while working on the plantation. Later, he moved to Honolulu looking for a stevedore position but worked as a dishwasher instead. There were no opportunities for Asians to work as a stevedore.

In February 1942, Barney joined the Army and did not receive weapons training. Therefore he did not go overseas with the 100th. Barney stayed behind at Schofield and was part of the 1399 Engineer Construction Battalion. He left the 1399 to volunteer for the 442nd. Barney went to Camp Shelby, Mississippi for basic training. At Shelby, he was assigned to Company M, heavy weapons, as a runner and later transferred to Company I.

Barney fought in the Bruyeres and Biffontaine battles and later participated in the Lost Battalion rescue. He also fought in the Vosges Mountains against the German soldiers. He recalls his friends Fred Kameda and Shiro Kashino who were killed in action and that they were good soldiers.

Post-war, Barney returned to the plantation and worked as a supervisor. However, in 1946, there was a strike, and no one showed up for work. Later Barney goes back to Honolulu but could not find a job. The only positions available were stevedore or janitorial. Barney found work as a dishwasher because it was easier than plantation work.

Barney received the Medal of Honor for his service during World War Two but said the medal was not for himself but everyone in I Company.

The interviewer picks back up in mid conversation about Uyemura using his military leave to visit his family in camp and how easy it was to sneak in and not be caught by the guards. He goes in depth talking about his time in basic training and laughs while noting that he went through basic training three times before going into combat. Uyemura also talks about his first day in combat and life during combat in France and Italy. Apart from combat, he tells us the steps necessary to operate a machine gun and how many men it took to operate such heavy weaponry.</text>

<text>In this segment, Martin Tohara talks about the different types of heavy weaponry he encountered during the war. He also shares his memories of Spark Matsunaga. Tohara also speaks about how after being drafted he was asked to help with pronunciation of other Japanese names and his feelings about the war in general. At the end of the segment, Tohara tells us about things to remember about the war and how Japanese Americans are able to live the way they do today because of the Nisei veterans. Legacy is important to Tohara, and he is doing his part to keep the legacy of the 100th alive by educating others about the war.</text>
