Description
An account of the resource
Miyamoto continues his recollection of growing up on Hilo, where his pidgin English was heavy and his normal English was inconsistent. After graduation from high school, he and his family would move to Kalihi on Oahu. It was there that he would see the attacks on Pearl Harbor, thinking that it was just a military maneuver. Shortly after, his uncle would be taken in by the FBI, until after joining the Army, Miyamoto would write a letter to the military government asking for his release. He would be transported to the mainland and taken to basic training at Camp Shelby, as part of the original 442nd Regiment. Next, he talks about his first combat experience, facing discrimination, and seeing his cousin who was fighting with the 100th Regiment.

An account of the resource
William Yoshito Thompson is a World War Two veteran who volunteered for the 442nd (Head Quarters 2nd Battalion). He is born March 15, 1924, in Hilo, Hawaii. His father is from Scotland, Ireland, and moved to Hawaii. He remains a British subject and is not able to become a citizen because of paperwork. His mother is born in Hamakuapko plantation on Maui. Her parents are from Hiroshima, Japan.
William discusses his journey of researching his family's genealogical information of his grandfather's (on his mother side) last name and his own father's last name.
William is hapa, and he describes the home life of being Scottish and Japanese American. When not attending primary school and Japanese Language School, William enjoys watching movies, swimming, playing games, and helps with household chores.
In school, William is a good student and wants to attend college. He says all his teachers are influential to his education. After graduating from High School, he works in a few places. One is the County of Hawaii with his father in the County garage. William says his father is a reputable blacksmith for his craftsmanship.
William recalls December 7 when Pearl Harbor is attacked and discusses his decision to volunteer for the 442nd.

In this segment, Takemoto describes his family background and life prior to the onset of the Second World War. His parents were Niseis who did not have a strong connection to Japan. While working for the Hilo Electric Light Company, Takemoto voluntarily enlisted for the Army without consulting with his parents leading to a short-lived feud. He played baseball in his school-aged years, but claims that he was disallowed to play with other Japanese American soldiers in the Army because he was not from Honolulu.
