Description
An account of the resource
Dr. Coolidge Shiro Wakai was part of the 100th Company B. He was born December 2, 1925, in Kappa, Kauai, Hawaii. Coolidge's father was a missionary for Japanese Immigrants and established the first Christian church in Kappa, Kauai. Coolidge has six brothers and a sister.
After Coolidge's father passed away, the family moved to Honolulu. His mother worked hard to support the family. At age fifteen, Coolidge went to the mainland for higher education. He settled in California and found a job as a houseboy. Coolidge attended Berkeley High School.
On December 7, Coolidge attended church and learned the news when he went home. Coolidge did not feel any discrimination when he moved to the mainland. His employer and classmates at high school treated him fairly. The following day after Pearl Harbor, Coolidge went to school. He continued to focus on his educational goals.
When Executive Order 9066 was signed, Coolidge and his brother reported to Tanforan. After three to fourth months in Tanforan, Coolidge was sponsored to leave the camp to go to New York. In 1944 Coolidge graduated high school in New York and applied for college. He attended Grinnell College in Iowa with financial assistance from scholarships and a family from Kauai. After his first year of college, Coolidge was drafted into the military.
Coolidge was inducted at Fort Sheridan and shipped to Camp Blanding, Florida. During basic training, Coolidge made many friends and had a good relationship with everyone.
Overseas, he was assigned to Company B, 3rd Platoon. Coolidge's first battle was in the mountains near Carrara, Italy. After Coolidge's first battle in Italy, he kept moving up the mountains above Leghorn. Coolidge recalls not showering for one month.
Coolidge recalls climbing Po Valley with his gear. Besides climbing the rigorous terrain, food was scarce. Later, the 100th and 442nd were called to France for the Gothic Line because the military needed the left flank to be covered. Coolidge was attached to the 92nd Division.
When the war ended, Coolidge was in the mountains. There were no roads in the mountains. Therefore, airplanes dropped down the rations for them. Being overseas, Coolidge missed hot cook meals. He was living off of C rations and K rations.

Description
An account of the resource
Kimura would graduate from high school at the young age of 16 and would move out on his own to Waimea in Kauai. He would continue playing baseball and football, but would also work as a carpenter. Next, while practicing for an upcoming baseball game, he would hear about the attacks on Pearl Harbor. Not long after that, he would volunteer for the Army, hearing about the 100th Infantry already drafted. He would head to Schofield Barracks in Honolulu and then to Camp Shelby on the mainland to begin his basic training. While in the south, he immediately saw the racial segregation, at times being called names and being asked to sit at the back of the bus. He would also travel around while taking passes, seeing places like New Orleans and Chattanooga. He also talks about the conflicts between mainland and Hawaiian soldiers and seeing the American concentration camps. Next, he discusses the german weapons that he would have to learn about before being shipped to Europe. He would ship out to Naples in Italy but would first take a furlough and see New York City.

Description
An account of the resource
Aki continues to talk about his experiences as a prisoner of war while in Japan. Towards the end of the war, he noticed that a lot of weird things were happening with the Japanese Army guards and that the POWs were taken out of work. He overheard that Japan had surrendered and that there would be an airlift available in Kagoshima. He would escape the camp and make his way to Kagoshima, taking trains that were packed and noticing that Japanese civilians seemed scared of them, and seeing the devastation of Japan from the bombings. Once he made it there, he would have a spoon of ice cream and a Coca-Cola and get ready for his journey back to the United States. They would stop first in Okinawa, getting repatriated and then getting on another boat headed for San Francisco before finally making it back to Hawaii. Once returned to Kauai, he would begin working at a police station as a clerk typist. He would be forced to enter the draft and would end up joining the Air Force. In order to avoid being in the Korean War, he would end up going to occupied Japan.

Description
An account of the resource
Aki was working as a messman on Wake Island during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Days after, the Japanese Navy arrived on the island and took all American personnel captive as prisoners of war. Aki was sent to a POW camp in Japan, where he stayed for the duration of the war. After Japan's surrender, he returned safely to Hawaii, but later enlisted for the draft. Once the Korean War began, Aki was drafted into the Air Force, where he was stationed in Japan for two years.

Description
An account of the resource
Aki begins the interview talking about his family, both of his parents were Nisei and had decided to settle in Kauai, his father being a politician, while his mother was a schoolteacher. As a child, he would grow up liking geography, while his brother would be the disciplinarian of the family. Growing up, he would sometimes be a golf caddy for extra money so he could hang out with his friends, never really dealing with discrimination except for a couple of incidences. After this, he would be taken to Honolulu to attend St. Louis High School, but would end up heading back to Kauai to finish up his schooling. After this, he would begin working on the pineapple cannery, before heading back to Honolulu to find other work. He would then get a job with a construction company on Wake Island, where he would receive a letter from his father that a war was coming between the United States and Japan and if it happens, he should do his duty and join the Marines.

Description
An account of the resource
Oshita continues talking about the aftermath of Pearl Harbor. Although not seeing any direct discrimination, she talks about the FBI taking many of the Japanese and her future husband George deciding to volunteer for the Army. They would get engaged before he left for the mainland and she would see him off at Iolani Palace. Next, she talks about the different types of citizenship that were had and how most Japanese Americans were also registered with the Japanese consulate. She also talks about George's experiences in the war, including getting seasick on the boat ride to the mainland and writing to him often. She also discusses the relationship she had with George and the emotion and affection they shared for each other, even when most Japanese were very stoic.

Hoashi talks about the lessons that he learned during the war and from combat. After that, he tells about the awards that he received after he was discharged, including the Bronze Star. He would head back home to Kauai, where he would be reunited with his grandmother. We would enjoy the 52-20 club before getting into his career as an electrician and also working with birds. He finishes with a message for future generations that you must give credit to those soldiers that went into the war and put their life on the line, even if they never shot a single bullet.

An account of the resource
Hoashi discusses more about growing up on Kauai. At the age of 12, he would begin working at McBride plantation during the summers. He also talks about the impactful people he knew during this period of time. From there, he gives us his whereabouts during the attacks on Pearl Harbor, hearing it first on the radio, and then running down to the baseball fields to inform others. After that, he would be moved to the electrical department at McBride plantation, but the island would be under martial law. As he heard about a regiment forming in the Army, he made the decision to volunteer.
