<text>Nishioka talks more about growing up in Hawaii and his whereabouts when he first heard about the attacks on Pearl Harbor. At the time, he would be part of both the 4F Club and the Young Buddhist Association (YBA), and would be forced to black out their windows during the night. Next, he talks about the formation of the 100th Infantry Battalion and the reasons for volunteering for the Army. He would take his physical and head to Schofield Barracks in Honolulu, marching in front of Iolani Palace before being shipped to the mainland. He talks briefly about the boat ride to California and then would get on a train and head to Mississippi, seeing the vast landscapes along the way. </text>

His father would come to Hawaii and begin a general store, his mother was born in Hawaii and would help out at the store, while all of his brothers would end up being involved in the military at one point in their lives. Next, he talks about what it was like to grow up in Hawaii, practicing kendo and being part of a community that was mostly Japanese. He talks about his whereabouts during the attacks on Pearl Harbor and hearing about it on the radio. As he was working at Sears-Roebuck at the time, he and a friend decided to volunteer for the Army, even though his father had been incarcerated and sent to Sand Island.</text>
