Next, he talks about being in the pineapple fields when he first heard of the attacks on Pearl Harbor and staying at the boarding house due to curfew. He would volunteer for the Army, going first to Schofield Barracks before getting shipped to the mainland. Once arrived, they would head to Camp Shelby in Mississippi, to begin their basic training. He talks about going into towns and the hot weather they endured before shipping overseas and landing in Naples. Next, he talks about his first combat in Rome, and seeing the gruesome casualties.</text>

Next, he talks about what it was like to grow up in Hawaii up until the Pearl Harbor attacks. After that, he would join the Army, heading to Mississippi to begin his basic training with the 442nd Regiment. He would experience the segregation of the south and conflict between Hawaiian and mainland soldiers before being shipped out to Europe. He would be involved in many different combat battles, including Bruyeres-Biffontaine, the Lost Battalion and the Gothic Line. Throughout this time, he would receive one wound, on his hand. Following the Gothic Line push, Germany would surrender and he would be shipped back to the mainland and then back to Maui. There, he would begin his career at a bank and start his family. Next, he discusses more of his experiences throughout basic training and overseas, including a discussion on the difference in weapons between America and Germany.</text>

He also talks about his brother that was already in the 100th infantry and his progressions to get there. After this, he talks about his journey to joining the Army, as the government was asking for volunteers to be replacements. He would report to his draft board and be shipped out to Camp Shelby in Mississippi. There he would learn basic training with heavy weapons and guard the Afrikan Korps German prisoners of war. He would be sent over early to Europe as they were in need of replacements and would take a convoy of ships through the Strait of Gibraltar. As Mount Vesuvius was erupting, they would have to take a detour but would eventually end up in Italy, where they would be on their way to link up with the 100th Infantry Battalion. </text>

After a 30 day furlough, he would begin his basic training at Camp Shelby as a replacement for the 100th Infantry Battalion. He would be trained with the heavy guns team. He talks about the fighting between the mainland and Hawaiian soldiers and how they took the Hawaiian soldiers to Rohwer concentration camp, where they would learn about the incarceration of Japanese Americans. Next, he would be shipped out in a convoy for 28 days, arriving first in North Africa before docking near Naples in Italy. He would join up with the 442nd Regiment, M company and head to Anzio, followed by Hill 140, where he would be wounded in action.</text>

He would first begin his training there before being sent to Camp Crowder to begin training with the Quartermaster Corps, and not being around many Nisei soldiers. Next, he talks about Executive Order 9066 and his parents being sent to the Puyallup assembly center and then Minidoka concentration camp in Idaho. He would be reassigned to training at Camp Carson, then Camp Hale to do office work before finally landing at Camp Shelby in Mississippi. There, he found out about the 442nd Regiment being formed and would become a squad leader. He talks about the maneuvers and Earl Finch, and what it was like to be in the South during that time. After this, he would be sent to Newport News to be shipped out to Europe. </text>

He began his basic training in Alabama where he would train for heavy weaponry, including the antitank cannon and mortars. Next, he would be shipped to Italy to begin combat, starting in Naples and going throughout Italy and France. Being on the mortar team, he would only have to actually shoot the mortar gun one time throughout his time in Europe, but he would have a lot of experiences. <text>Arakaki talks about visiting Japan as a toddler and remembering how poor his family was while living there, often only having a slice of bread for lunch. The family would move back to Hawaii to escape that, and would have much more opportunity and food there. He would work hard, raising the pigs and picking up garbage early in the morning before walking to school, so when he heard about recruiting for the 442nd, he was one of the first to volunteer. He would be inducted into the Army and head to Schofield Barracks and then make his way to Camp Shelby in Mississippi. He talks about the experiences he had while in Camp Shelby, including the food, fighting between the Hawaiian and mainland soldiers, and seeing segregation of African Americans. After this, he talks about his reaction to hearing about American concentration camps for Japanese and more about his basic training. He would then be shipped overseas, first landing in Casablanca, and then heading up to Europe. </text>
