Title
Munro Shintani oral history interview, part 2 of 3, May 21, 2006
Description
After graduating from high school, Shintani joined the Army, going to basic training at Camp Shelby in Mississippi. It was here that he saw firsthand, the segregation throughout the South. At the same time, he would see fighting between Hawaiian and mainland soldiers in his unit, until Earl Finch took some Hawaiian soldiers to concentration camps so they could see what the mainland soldiers were going through. During basic training, Shintani trained as an ammo bearer and worked with bazookas. Next, he discusses the differences in weapons used, from both the Americans and the Germans. His regiment was then sent out to Oran in North Africa for a month to do some final training and guarding, and then to Naples, Italy to begin combat. Once landed in Europe, F company was immediately thrown into the war, being pinned down and hoping to make it out alive.
