Description
An account of the resource
During wartime, Hiroshi "Hershey" Miyamura worked at the Ford Agency and was the youngest mechanic at 17 years old. He recalls December 7, 1941, and hearing the news when he went duck hunting. Hershey was shocked and felt uncertain about the future for Japanese Americans.
The community of Gallup after the Pearl Harbor attack did not blame the Japanese Americans for the bombing. Shortly after December 7, law enforcement came to Hershey's home and confiscated the radio and camera. Some of the men in Gallup tried to volunteer but were labeled 4C "enemy alien." They had to wait to receive a draft notice to serve in the Army.
In January 1944, Hershey was drafted into the Army. Hershey tried to volunteer a year earlier but was not accepted. After getting the draft notice, Hershey reported to Camp Blanding, Florida, and Camp Shelby, Mississippi, for training.
Hershey discusses the relationship between the Hawaiian soldiers and the Mainland soldiers. Hershey made friends easily and got along with the Hawaiian soldiers.
When the 442nd replacement was leaving for overseas, seven soldiers and Hershey stayed behind due to their age. Then Hershey was assigned to the 100th Battalion, D Company, the heavy weapons company. Hershey then took 13 weeks of heavy weapons basic training.
Later, Hershey was attached to the 171st Separate Battalion. After arriving in Naples, Italy, Hershey learned the war ended in Europe. Hershey was assigned to guard the POWs and military and medical supplies.
Hershey spent most of his time in Italy except when he went on furlough to Switzerland. When Hershey returned to the mainland, there were festivities welcoming home the soldiers. Hershey reported to Fort Meade for his discharge, but he reenlisted for the Army Reserve for three years.

Description
An account of the resource
Tetsuo Asato was 19 years old when he went overseas. He recalls the weight of carrying his weapons. The heaviness of the weapons did not become too strenuous on Tetsuo until he was trying to climb the mountain. Tetsuo recalls being a litter-bearer and carrying a wounded off the battlefield. The 92nd Division came and gave him rations.
Before going to Italy, the 442nd went to France. However, General Mark Clark requested the 442nd's return to Italy to break the Gothic Line. The 442nd took the German SS Troop by surprise when they attacked from the rear.
When the 442nd left Italy, the 552nd Artillery stayed behind. Later the 552nd went to Germany and were the first in Dachau.
The worst part of the war for Tetsuo was the casualties. He recalls several times he came across deceased soldiers. Another bad memory of the war was being under heavy fire.
When the war ended, Tetsuo got a pass and went to Switzerland and different rest areas. The highlight was Angelburg because he learned how to ski. Many years later, Tetsuo revisited Switzerland in the springtime.

An account of the resource
Enoch Kanaya reflects on his time in combat and his squad members.
He said their confidence in each other helped them do their jobs well and they trusted each other.
After the war ended, Enoch was assigned to guard the Prisoners of War (POWs) and various Rest Camps. When Enoch had enough points, he returned to the United States. The 500 men landed in New York, and there was a large homecoming committee with dancing and a parade. Enoch recalls the homecoming parade in Washington DC and receiving the Presidental Unit Citation and the Bronze Star.
Post-war, he attended school at North Western and a Television Institute. Also, Enoch got married to Caroline and has four daughters and two grandchildren. He feels proud to serve with the 442nd. The Issei and Nisei gave their best efforts in World War Two and persevered. They leave a legacy that will be remembered.

Description
An account of the resource
James Fujii felt the teachers were instrumental with the move to Nyssa. The teachers protected the Japanese Americans from discrimination. In 1944, James graduated high school. He recalls spending three and a half years in Nyssa during wartime.
In February 1945, James received his Army draft and went to Texas for basic training. Basic training lasted four months, and he went overseas to Germany.
At the end of 1945, James goes overseas to Dorndorf, Germany, for five to six months with the occupation forces. He says Dorndorf, Germany, was rebuilt by the American Army and did not look affected by wartime. It was evident the United States was trying to keep the peace by helping Germany rebuild.
After several months in Germany, James was discharged in 1946. He enrolled in college to learn about agriculture and worked on the family farm. James was married for 40 years to Susie, and they have five children and four grandchildren.
James discusses the contributions of the Japanese Americans during World War Two. James loves the United States and says it is the best place to live.

Murakami discusses his part in the Gothic Line push. Once they completed that mission, he was able to head back to the United States. After arriving in New York, the regiment learned they would be flown back to California, which left them in high spirits. Unfortunately, after stopping in Texas, the plane crashed and multiple passengers died, leaving many of the soldiers in the hospital and unable to go home as originally planned. After 17 days in the hospital, Murakami was able to go to Camp Beale where he would be discharged and take a boat back to Hawaii. There, he was able to reunite with his family and eventually marry his high school sweetheart. Finally, he discusses his family including great grandchildren, and a message for future generations.

Kawakami continues talking about his experiences overseas during World War II. He was wounded during combat in France, and was in the hospital for about a month, but prior to that he was involved in many big battles including the Lost Battalion and Leghorn. Between the battles, they would be able to get some time for rest and relaxation in Switzerland, where they would get hot meals and a clean bed to sleep in. Once the war ended, they were all sent back to the mainland for discharge and Kawakami would end up back in Hawaii, before going back out to Chicago to look for work. It was there that he met his wife and started a family. Finally, he gives a message for future generations to love one another and respect one another for a more peaceful future.

Description
An account of the resource
Ida continues to talk about the Champagne Campaign and the rest and relaxation they got, not needing to fight any real battles. He talks about going down to Leghorn and getting wounded a second time while in Carrara. He also talks about confiscating a German payroll truck and taking thousands of dollars, which they would cash in Switzerland. Shortly after getting his eardrums blown out by a shell, he would learn of the end of the war. Next, he talks about correspondence with family and politics in Hawaii. He would spend some time in Switzerland after the war and head back to the United States.

Sato looks through a few more pictures, while narrating his whereabouts at the end of the war, going from Ghedi through Florence, processing prisoners of war, and getting promoted to staff sergeant. As he didn't have enough points to head home yet, he would continue staying at the POW camp and would get to travel to Switzerland. Shortly after, he would return to the United States, first stopping in New York before heading back to Chicago to get his discharge. His family in the meantime would head back to Fresno, where he would learn that his car was still there, safe and sound. After this, he talks about his family background, including meeting his wife and his children and grandchildren.
