Uchimiya beings the interview with a brief introduction of his family and how they came to El Centro, California. There, he would begin his schooling, while working on the farm. His family would enjoy camping and taking month-long trips to San Diego. After high school, he would attend a junior college in Brawley until he was drafted into the Army. He would head to Camp Roberts to begin his basic training in field artillery, but during this time, the attacks on Pearl Harbor occurred and he would be moved to Fort McClellan, while his parents would be evacuated and moved to Poston Concentration Camp, his father being detained by the FBI for a time as well. Next, he talks about the infantry training he received the 442nd in Alabama and the shipment to France after. He also talks about the impactful people during that time and his knowledge of the camp his parents lived at.
