Taba continues with his time after he had joined the Army. After taking a train to Mississippi, he would begin his basic training at Camp Shelby, learning to be an assistant machine gunner. While there, he would join the 100th Infantry Battalion and really see the segregation of the south first hand. Once his training was complete, he would then be shipped out, where he would meet the others in the 100th Battalion for the first time. The ship would convoy to North Africa where he would stay for about a month until shipping out to Italy. In Italy, Taba would be assigned to the Headquarters company and sent to a team that would be in charge of mine sweeping so that tanks could get through without harm. He explains that process and his experience when a stone wall crumbled and he was buried alive for about five minutes until someone was able to dig him out. Next, he talks about various other war experiences, including the various battles that he took part in.

Ida talks more about volunteering for the Army, going into Schofield Barracks where he would be given the title acting sergeant. He would head to the mainland, landing first in San Francisco before taking the train down to Camp Shelby in Mississippi. Next, he talks about the rigors of basic training, including the chiggers, 25 mile hikes, and making it all the way up to staff sergeant. He also talks about the relationship between mainland and Hawaiian soldiers throughout the training and meeting Earl Finch. After this, he talks about his time visiting places outside of the camp, including Hattiesburg and Jackson, and the prejudice that they saw throughout the south.

Oura continues his recollection of the attacks on Pearl Harbor and the subtle discriminations that he felt. After this, he decided that he would volunteer for the Army without his parents knowing. However, he was told the quota was filled, but fighting to join the Army, he eventually was given the okay to serve. After another hick-up at Schofield Barracks, he would ship out to Camp Shelby via the SS Lurline. After a few days about the ship, they would land in San Francisco and train to Mississippi, There, he would begin training with K Company and see a lot of things that he'd never seen in Hawaii, including chiggers, snakes and segregation.

Ichiuji continues to talk about being in Poston concentration camp with his family, the living conditions being poor but they were able to set up a shoe repair shop. He would then volunteer to join the 442nd and talks about the loyalty questions they were forced to answer in the camps. He would get inducted at Fort Douglas before heading to Camp Shelby. He talks about his first exposure to segregation in the south, not knowing if they should use the white or colored bathrooms. Next, he talks about the relationships between the Hawaiian and mainland soldiers. He also talks about doing maneuvers in Louisiana and how the locals in those areas were very friendly, making them fried chicken.

Arakaki talks about visiting Japan as a toddler and remembering how poor his family was while living there, often only having a slice of bread for lunch. The family would move back to Hawaii to escape that, and would have much more opportunity and food there. He would work hard, raising the pigs and picking up garbage early in the morning before walking to school, so when he heard about recruiting for the 442nd, he was one of the first to volunteer. He would be inducted into the Army and head to Schofield Barracks and then make his way to Camp Shelby in Mississippi. He talks about the experiences he had while in Camp Shelby, including the food, fighting between the Hawaiian and mainland soldiers, and seeing segregation of African Americans. After this, he talks about his reaction to hearing about American concentration camps for Japanese and more about his basic training. He would then be shipped overseas, first landing in Casablanca, and then heading up to Europe.
