An account of the resource
Hiroshi "Hershey" Miyamura discusses learning his family history through relatives. His father, Yaichi Miyamura, and mother were from Kumamoto, Kyushu, Japan. He immigrated to Gallup, N.M. briefly before returning to Japan to bring Hershey's mother to the United States.
In Japan, Hershey's father was drafted into the Japanese Military. Three years later, Hershey's parents returned to the United States. Hershey's parents settled in Gallup in 1906.
Hershey lost his mother when he was eleven years old, and his father had to raise seven children alone. His father was very strict and ran a restaurant called Ok Cafe.
Hershey's father instilled in him to be a good person and citizen. When the children were not in school, they helped at the restaurant. Hershey, favorite memory was a family gathering and eating Japanese food. Hershey loved sushi the most.
Hershey’s favorite childhood activities were hanging out with his friends, boxing, fishing, hunting, and bowling. At 14 years old, Hershey’s father bought him a car.
Growing up in Gallup, the community was diverse. He was aware of his Japanese ancestry and did not feel different from his peers. In the Army, Hershey made many good friends too.

An account of the resource
Nagano continues his recollection of his time overseas during the war. He talks about his experience in a shell hole and seeing people fish with concussion grenades. He would be an interrogator of prisoners of war while in New Guinea and was then sent to Officer Candidate School. After completion of the school, he would head to the Philippines to begin his assignment as an officer at the General Headquarters. Due to the points system, he was offered a chance to go back home, so he would head to Japan to catch a ship home, he would however, have some trouble in finding one right away. He would end up trying to meet up with his sister in Ibaraki and visiting the town of Zama with friends until he was finally able to head home. He would end up in San Pedro, where his brother would pick him up and he would join the Army Reserves before going out to Minnesota to meet back up with his wife.

Description
An account of the resource
Frank Hiratsuka is born July 16, 1926, in Aliso, CA. In the late 1800's Frank's grandparents immigrate to the United States and have eight children.
Frank's grandfather is a farmer, and Frank's father briefly works on the farm until he gets another job. Both Frank's parents work in private homes and live at the employer's home. Frank's parents are hard-working and work six days a week.
During the Great Depression, Frank says life is not difficult because his parents have a stable job. Although his parents are always working, they do have time off to spend with family and friends. Frank says New Year is a festive holiday with Japanese food and family.
At school, Frank's favorite subjects are art and music. He plays numerous instruments from the violin, saxophone to the clarinet. He recalls performing at the World Fair with his school band.
Frank's childhood activities consist of games, marbles, movies, and listening to adventure shows on the radio.
On December 7, Frank remembers listening to the radio and hearing the news broadcast about Pearl Harbor. Frank and his parents and the bus driver from the Japanese School decide to go to Ridley (the safe zone).

An account of the resource
Frank Tadao Matsuda is born on January 9, 1922, in Seattle, Washington. His father, Saiki Frank Matsuda, and mother, Masae Miyoshi, are from Japan. Frank has an older sister Aiko and a younger sister Kathryn Sumiko. Frank is closest to Aiko because he lives with her in Chicago post-war.
Frank grows up during the Great Depression. Although money is hard to earn during the Great Depression, Frank's father buys a house for around $2,000. Asians could not own homes or property because of the Alien Land Law. After camp, Frank's sister's name is on the deed because she is an American citizen.
The Matsuda family lives in the community of Ballard in Seattle. The demographic is predominately Scandinavian. Frank remembers there are four Japanese American families plus them. Frank has many friends on 69th Street.
Frank recalls December 7 and the evacuation orders, Executive Order 9066 (EO9066). He says the Japanese Americans becomes the most hated people after Pearl Harbor. The Matsuda family goes to Puyallup and Minidoka. He describes the living conditions and provisions in camp.
Frank did not stay at Minidoka for long. He takes the opportunity to work on a sugar beet farm in Idaho. Later he goes to Salt Lake City to work at a meatpacking company and restaurant.

Following the American concentration camps in Idaho, Tochihara would volunteer for the Army, wanting to fight for the country he was born and raised in. After a 30 day furlough, he would begin his basic training at Camp Shelby as a replacement for the 100th Infantry Battalion. He would be trained with the heavy guns team. He talks about the fighting between the mainland and Hawaiian soldiers and how they took the Hawaiian soldiers to Rohwer concentration camp, where they would learn about the incarceration of Japanese Americans. Next, he would be shipped out in a convoy for 28 days, arriving first in North Africa before docking near Naples in Italy. He would join up with the 442nd Regiment, M company and head to Anzio, followed by Hill 140, where he would be wounded in action.

An account of the resource
Sukeo "Skeets" Oji returned to the United States and was assigned to Engineer Section, Headquarters, 6th Army, Presidio, Monterey. In 1954, he was reassigned to Japan as the liaison officer between the Ministry of Construction and the US Army Forces Japan. His task was to work with the Japan Construction Agency to build all the Army facilities in Japan.
As a Liaison Officer, the big mission at the time was the Government Relocation Construction Program. Allocating the funding for the program would take a long time. However, Japan decided to use their reparation money to construct the buildings to meet the safety standards. When the construction was complete, the next mission was to build a commutation system throughout Japan.
He finished the project in 1957, and return to the United States. Skeets was reassigned to G4, Headquarters Company, 6th Army, Presidio, Monterey. He was a General Staff Officer in charge of maintenance. After he finished his tour, he asked to go back to Japan but was declined.
In 1959 Skeets went to Hanau, Germany, and was assigned as an Engineer Officer. Later he was assigned to replace a Major in Baumholder as Post Engineer responsible for maintenance and engineering facility. He also oversaw a Quarter Master Depot and Hospital. When Skeets was not working, he explored Europe and went sightseeing.
He finished his career in Europe in 1960 and was reassigned to Sierra Army Depot as Post Engineer and served for two years. Besides working, he also continued his education to get his engineering status for the Federal Civil Service. Skeets got his degree and was promoted to GS11 Engineer.
In 1963, Skeets retired from his military service. Skeets moved to Berkeley and worked as a civilian as a Utilities Management Engineer for the Navy.
Skeets remarried and lived in Berkeley, but the commute to Sharp Army Depot in Stockton was too long. Skeets found a job at Oakland Army Base as an Engineer before having the opportunity with the Navy as a Utilities Contracting Officer. Right before Skeets' retirement in 1978, he suggested to the Navy to microfiche the remaining files. He ended up working a few more years.
After retiring from the Military and Federal Civil Service of 42 years, Skeets now spends his time with his wife and children. Skeets has two daughters, and his second wife has three daughters. Skeets and his second wife have thirteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Skeets love traveling and recalls his trip to China.

Description
An account of the resource
James Murata was born on August 6, 1920, in San Jose, CA. James' parents were from Shimane-ken, Japan. James' father was a good father but passed away early. Before James' father passed away, he was a hard worker to provide for the family. When he had free time, he would take James and his six siblings fishing, abalone hunting, and to the beaches.
Growing up, James liked playing baseball. There was no radio at home to listen to the baseball games, but there was a phonograph. James' parents would listen to Japanese music, and James liked symphony music.
James' father had to relocate for work a few times before settling in Santa Moreno Valley. Growing up in Santa Moreno Valley, James had many friends at school.
Besides primary school, James attends Japanese Language School to please his parents. The Japanese Language teachers tried to teach the students how to read and write. However, the teachers were not strict. As he got older, James saw himself more as a Japanese American with western traditions due to the environment he grew up in.
James did not feel conflicted between Japanese culture and Western culture. He accepted what the teachers taught him at Japanese Language School. In primary school, he focused on his classwork. At home, his Issei parents taught him Japanese values and obligations. In school, James participated in tennis and football.
On Sundays, James’ family attended Buddhist church. Religion was a big part of his parents’ life. In James' spare time, he would watch feature filmed movies and Japanese movies.

An account of the resource
Sumio Frank Shimada was born on April 21, 1918, in Vacaville, CA. Later his family moved to Cordelia and then San Jose. Frank revisited Vacaville last year for a reunion. He described the changes in the town since his childhood.
Frank discusses his school years. In Vacaville, he attended primary school and Japanese Language School. Later, when the family moved to Cordelia, he went to a small grammar school and attended Sunday school at a Lutheran Church. After five years, Frank's family moved to San Jose. When Frank went overseas during wartime, he missed the valleys of San Jose the most. The valley was the most beautiful when the flowers were blooming.
In high school, Frank enrolled at a Prep Ministry school in Oakland. He graduated high school in 1936. Being the oldest son, Frank had responsibilities to the family. Therefore, he worked on the strawberry farm to help his parents. Later, Frank's family moved to Santa Clara and rented an area for farming.
In 1941, Frank moved to Los Angeles to help his half-brother in the trucking business. He recalls hearing the news about Pearl Harbor and shares his reaction to the event.
After President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, there were restrictions for the Japanese Americans. Frank's first reaction to Executive Order 9066 was the government could not do this to American citizens. He could only comply with the government orders because his parents taught him to respect authority.
Frank evacuated to Santa Anita Assembly Center with the Japanese Americans from Mountain View Palo Alto and later to Heart Mountain. Frank only took what he could carry to camp.

An account of the resource
During the occupation of Japan, Maya Miyamoto worked in Tokyo. He had a driver's license and could drive jeeps, tanks, and other vehicles. Therefore, a Lieutenant asked him to stay in Tokyo.
Maya's assignment was to drive the gas truck and trailer to Yokohama to get gas and haul rations or to get rations. Eventually, Maya's outfit got move vehicles, and the transport got the gas. Maya did not have to drive to get gas anymore. Maya became to head the Motor Pool as Motor Sergeant.
Besides work, Maya played a lot of baseballs. They started as a softball team, and they won a championship in the CIC detachment. There were many professional baseball players among their troops. Later, Maya played for the GHQ's baseball team. Maya's position was pitcher, short and third. He had fun and traveled around for games. In 1949, Maya received an award from the Commanding General for playing in the all-Japan tournament. Baseball in Japan was very popular.
Another popular activity during the occupation was the Black Market. Maya explains that the black market was selling or bartering items like a cigarette for Japanese yen. However, some individuals have the black market as a business. Maya had his wife with him in Japan, and he did not want the risk of her being sent back to the United States. Maya shares his thoughts on the blanket market. The black market was a big moneymaker.
During the occupation, there were food shortages in Japan. Maya did what he could to help to locals. He recalls helping the Japanese nationalists by giving them salt, bait to go fishing, and rations. Maya said the Japanese nationalist workers at the CIC performed good work, and you could trust them. Maya found the Japanese nationals to be trustworthy people.

Hoashi discusses more about growing up on Kauai. At the age of 12, he would begin working at McBride plantation during the summers. He also talks about the impactful people he knew during this period of time. From there, he gives us his whereabouts during the attacks on Pearl Harbor, hearing it first on the radio, and then running down to the baseball fields to inform others. After that, he would be moved to the electrical department at McBride plantation, but the island would be under martial law. As he heard about a regiment forming in the Army, he made the decision to volunteer.

An account of the resource
Toshiyuki Uchida and Kiyoshi Kinoshita begin the interview with an introduction and background on their nicknames and families. Both were born in Washington and would attend school and Japanese language school, enjoying the outdoors. Next, they both talk about their respective whereabouts during the attacks on Pearl Harbor, Kinoshita hearing in Tacoma, and Uchida hearing at his work as a machine operator. Both had families that would be evacuated to Puyallup Assembly Center and then moved to Minidoka concentration camp in Idaho. As Kinoshita was still young at the time, he enjoyed his time at the camp. Uchida would become close with Kinoshita's sister, who would later become his wife. They each talk about the importance of Issei during this time and the hardship that they went through. They also talk about the living conditions and what it felt like to be watched from a guard tower with a machine gun.

An account of the resource
Hideo Morinaka begins the interview speaking of his family background and growing up in Utah. He would enjoy hunting, fishing and playing football while growing up on a 120 acre farm. Throughout his schooling, he would also be responsible for milking the cows on his farm and was often faced with discrimination. Next, while taking a trip to Los Angeles, the attacks on Pearl Harbor occurred and he was forced to stay at a hotel for a month and half until his brothers were able to come and take them back to Utah. Being that they lived in Utah, they were not forced to live in an American concentration camp, but in 1944 was drafted into the Army. Morinaka would head down to Camp Blanding in Florida to begin his basic training before being sent over to Germany for military occupation.
