While attending regular school during the weekdays, Kawagoye would also attend Japanese language school on the weekends. He would be lucky to have some very impactful teachers during this time, and was always regarded as a good student. Next, he talks about his whereabouts during the Pearl Harbor attacks, and would head home but life would resume as usual until the Executive Order 9066 came around. Luckily, his family was invited to another Japanese families farm in Nebraska, where they would be able to avoid going to the camps and continue working. He would keep up with news of the war on the radio, and when hearing of the heroics of the 442nd and 100th regiments, he decided he would join the Army as well. He would join at Fort Douglas, and be sent to Camp Blanding to begin his basic training. While training, he would be placed in the Military Intelligence School in Minnesota, and they would get word that the war had ended both in Europe and in Japan and his services would end after a year. He would be discharged and use the GI bill to continue his education at the University of Chicago, in which time, he would meet his future wife. They would go on to adopt two children and live happily in California.

Takusagawa continues his discussion on growing up in Santa Barbara, including the impactful people that he grew up with, helping him to become a more rounded person. Eventually, this guided him to joining the school band, playing the snare drum, which led him to a very special 21 day trip to Washington DC. Following high school, Takusagawa began to figure out a career path, most likely taking over the dry cleaning business after the passing of his father, however, the attacks on Pearl Harbor occurred. As Executive Order 9066 was posted, the early relationships with neighborhood friends worked in his favor, as his family was able to store their furniture in their homes. Next, he and his family headed to Tulare Temporary Detention Center, where conditions were crude and his family was forced to live in a horse stall.

He talks about the various restrictions that the civilians had, and the few things that they would do for fun, such as going to the movies. He then talks about how the 100th and 442nd were formed and the background of the Military Intelligence Service (MIS). He also talks about his personal identity during the wartime, and learning about the American concentration camps in the mainland. During this time, he was in high school, and would continue on as usual, taking English courses and putting out a yearbook. Only a couple of months after his high school graduation, he would be drafted into the Army and head to Schofield Barracks where he would be notified of his assignment to the Military Intelligence Service.
