Description
An account of the resource
According to Willie Tanamachi, there are two ways Japanese Americans joined the military. One way is being drafted before the war. Another way is enlisting. Willie’s brothers Goro, Saburo, Walter, and himself served in the military. Unfortunately, Saburo is killed serving in E Company, 2nd Battalion. Goro works in the motor crew and Walter serves his time in the military in Germany.
During World War II, like some Japanese American soldiers, Willie faces struggles with promotions within the military. The only option is to transfer to different units. At the time Battle of the Bulge starts, Willie is approved to transfer and joins 171st Infantry Separate.
Willie discusses his duties and departments within the military. He works in the personnel department and post-war in supplies. After the war, Willie stays with the military. His decision is based on the way he is treated as an equal by his colleagues. Although there are some racist individuals, there are more people who see past his ethnicity.
During Occupation in Germany, Willie stays there from 1945 to 1953. He describes the effects of war on the cities and how the cities start to rebuilding economically. He also mentions the Hermann Goring and Rudolph Hess’s trial and the German gang Werewolves.
In 1946, Willie works in a supply depot in Munich. There are two supply depots. One is called Indiana Supply Depot (food) and the other is called Alabama Supply Deport (clothing). When troop's dependents came over to Germany, the BMW factory becomes furniture storage for dependents. As the economy starts thriving, the BMW asked for their factory back to build cars. Besides working in the military, Willie finds himself lucky in love and marries a German woman. They have been married for 53 years.

Description
An account of the resource
Yamada discusses playing sports in his childhood such as barefoot football, tennis and fishing with his friends. One holiday that his family celebrates annually is the Emperor of Japan's birthday and New Year (because of the food). They also sing Japan's anthem. In Yamada's older years, he enjoys holidays such as Christmas and New Year in Canada.
After high school, Yamada's parents encourage him to go to Japan for school. He goes to Kyoto, Japan and attends a Christian private school. Yamada recalls Japan's education is challenging because how different it is from Hawaii. In Hawaii, students at Japanese School learn ethics and behavior and class is an hour a day. In Japan, class is eight hours a day. Yamada says ethics is practice in daily routine and believes it is a necessary rule for upbringing.
Yamada returns home from Japan when 20 years old 1936 or 1937. He works at the local store and plantation before being drafted in 1941. The draft starts in 1941 because of conflicts in Europe. Yamada goes to Schofield Barracks for 1/2 year for infantry training.
When Pearl Harbor is bombed, Yamada's Father is incarcerated for three months by FBI for his community activities. Yamada is in the army already when this happened and is unable to be there for his Father. Yamada ships out with the Japanese unit to Oakland and then to Wisconsin June 1942. Yamada recalls having mix feelings about going. He waits to stay with family but is curious about Mainland and future activities.

Description
An account of the resource
Sakamoto continues to talk about his time at Heart Mountain concentration camp in Wyoming. He would work there as a swamper, sneaking out of the camp sometimes to hike the nearby mountains or play in the ravines. He would later be presented with the famous loyalty questionnaire in which he and his family would answer no-no, which would land them all in Tule Lake concentration camp. While there, the security was much heavier and the residents would pass the time by playing baseball. He talks about hearing about the 100th Infantry and 442nd Regiment and the sacrifices they were making. Next, he would hear about the end of the war and be admitted to leave the camp.

Description
An account of the resource
Yokote has an in depth discussion on his family's time in the American concentration camps. As he was angry about the way Japanese Americans were being treated, he at first refused to visit his family while at the Tule Lake concentration camp. His family would later be moved from Tule Lake to Amache concentration camp, which he felt was a better situation and was able to visit while on a leave. He talks about how Issei and Nisei were more stoic and didn't often show emotions or express how they felt, which may have hampered them during the war. After this, he talks about the values he was taught growing up and how those values would later help him when joining the Army.

Description
An account of the resource
Morishima reflects on the pleasant experience of attending school in Japan as a Japanese American, even after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He then describes his mother and siblings being stranded in Japan due to illness while his father was held in detention in Boston. He would have no communication with his father for four years. The segment ends with his conscription into the Japanese Army and a story about an incident at military school for which he takes responsibility out of a sense of honor.
