Araki continues his recollection of his time after being drafted into the Army and having an assignment in Hawaii, guarding Italian prisoners of war. Next, he discusses the Japanese language and the importance of the characters that are used. He would teach other soldiers in both romaji and the Japanese characters during their time in Hawaii. Next, after the atomic bombs had been dropped and the war ended, the soldiers were given a choice to re-enlist for the military occupation. Araki chose to re-enlist and was then shipped out to Japan to begin his assignment. Once arrived in Tokyo, he noticed the devastation of the war and was transported to Kyushu. Along the way he experienced the Japanese children trying to get the soldier's cigarettes to sell on the black market. Finally, he arrived at the island of Shikoku where he would begin his assignment with the British Army, translating and speaking with Japanese civilians.

Uesato continues his discussion of his time in occupied Japan. During this time, he was an interpreter for political analysts who were trying to get as much information as they could regarding Japan's population in politics. In this way, Uesato was able to make a lot of direct impact on the Japanese government, including involvement with the first general election that Japanese women got to vote in. Other than politics, he was also able to uncover some information on his brother that had been stuck in Japan after Pearl Harbor. Unfortunately, he found that he had passed away after contracting malaria. Uesato continued his interpreting in occupied Japan until he decided that a college education would be more important than a steady job. He would, however, end up coming back to Japan quite often as a purser, spending time in both Japan and San Francisco, where he would meet his future wife.

Tony Koura oral history interview, part 1 of 3, January 17, 2010
Tony Koura is born on June 26, 1926. Before being drafted into the military, Tony is at Manzanar. Despite the discrimination after the Pearl Harbor attack, Tony wants to volunteer for the Army because of patriotism.
After the draft notice, he receives his Military Intelligence Service (MIS) training. Tony is trained for occupational work and is assigned to the translation group for the invasion of Japan.
Tony's knowledge of the Japanese language and Japanese culture comes in handy for his training and during the occupation. At Fort Snelling, the training focuses on interpreting. After training, the overseas trip is delayed, and Tony ships out in November to Yokohama, Japan.
When Tony arrives in Yokohama, Japan, he sees the destruction of Japan first hand. He goes to Camp Zama, the Replacement Depot. He recalls the Japanese locals carry themselves very well despite going through the war. When Tony meets locals in Japan, they are curious about internment camps and the Japanese Americans on the mainland.
Tony gets his assignment and is assigned to the 5250th Technical Intelligence Company located at the former Tokyo First Armory at Camp Oji (Northern Tokyo). He is the interpreter for US Army scientists, engineers, chemists, and physicists whose responsibility is to investigate war crime activities of Japanese scientists and institutions. The US Army scientists are researching what the Japanese scientists were working on and discovered during the war.
When Tony has free time he goes on jeeps rides with a few other linguists and explores the countryside and beaches. Tony takes pictures during the occupations and describes a few of them.

Muranaka goes through his work in the Army after the end of World War Two, where he served in the Korean War. Next, he discusses the importance of Nisei soldiers during the occupation of Japan, and how big of an impact communication is in order to keep everyone on the same page. With many differences in culture, language and upbringing, Muranaka worked hard to make Japanese soldiers feel at ease while interrogating them. As many Nisei soldiers were also doing similar work, it became key to have skilled linguists in occupied Japan.

Next, he talks about the value of the Nisei linguist throughout the occupation and how it was much easier to do being a Japanese American, because you already have some background and cultural knowledge, which makes interpreting easier. Kaneshiro would get to revisit Japan and see the reconstruction in its final stages.

Sato continues his recollection of being an interpreter and interrogator in the Philippines. When arriving there, he would immediately notice the devastation and flatness that the war had caused. He talks about the children there seeing Japanese American soldiers but thinking they were Japanese soldiers. He would be involved with the war crimes trials, interrogating witnesses. Sato discusses various important people during the war, including a teacher from Hawaii and a spy for the American Army. After the Philippines, he would head back to Tokyo to get his discharge from the Army, but stayed around and would take a job interpreting and interrogating as a civil servant. He would also be involved with the Korean War as a civil servant, interrogating Korean soldiers that spoke Japanese. Then, due to the GI Bill, he would head back to Hawaii to begin college at the University of Hawaii. After this, he gives a background of his wife's family and how they came to meet.

Masato Eddy Kurushima oral history interview, part 1 of 8, February 23, 2002
Masato Eddy Kurushima is born on December 6, 1924, in Brawley, CA.
Masato changes his name to Eddy because of the confusion of his Japanese name with his sister's name in high school.
Eddy grows up on the farm and he describes his childhood and home life. Eddy's Issei parents are from Japan. Before coming to California, Eddy's father worked in Mexico on a farm and is fluent in Spanish.
At a young age, Eddy helps his father with interpreting negotiations and documents. They have a close relationship because Eddy understands his father the most. Eddy describes his father as a quiet, gentle, kind, and hard-working man.
Eddy also has fond memories of his mother. He describes his mother's life as a Cinderella story. Growing up, Eddy loves to draw, and his mother supports his interest.
As an artist, Eddy draws life on the farm and his family to illustrate his childhood.

Okumura begins the interview talking about his whereabouts when the war ended and Japan surrendered and his thoughts on the atomic bomb. At the time, he was already in the Army and had gone through his training, so he was sent overseas to begin his work in occupied Japan. He would stop off at a few islands before getting to Okinawa, helping to talk with Japanese civilians that were hiding out in caves. Next, he talks about how he came to learn Japanese as a sansei. After this, he talks more about his time in Japan, including the reconstruction and talking with Japanese civilians to understand their lives better. Okumura also discusses the harsh living conditions that the American soldiers dealt with in Okinawa, sleeping in a tent that would get soaked during the typhoons. He would spend more time in Okinawa, interpreting and helping when needed with the reconstruction, before getting discharged and heading back to the mainland. He would end up Hawaii and start a family, which now includes 10 grandchildren.

He was sent to Fort Snelling to take Japanese language courses, spending hours at a time studying after class ended. Next, he was sent to Fort McClellan in Alabama, where he would experience the discrimination and segregation of black civilians and soldiers. However, later he would end up getting drafted into the Army and being placed with the Military Intelligence School (MIS). He would report to Fort Snelling and be placed in the advanced class, where after just six months, he would be shipped out to Manila to begin his assignment translating and interpreting. Following his language school training, Hamashige went to continued his training, going to basic, then to Fort Snelling for interpreting training before being sent out to the Philippines for his first assignment. As the war was coming to an end, the work was light and he was shipped back out to Yokohama where he would see the damage done to Japan during the war. Again having light work, he was able to explore the surrounding areas, seeing relatives, relaying messages for those in need and visiting Hiroshima. Next, he was moved to Fukushima, where they would take over a power plant. After his discharge, Hamashige decided to further pursue his education, attending the University of Hawaii, and then Bowling Green State University before moving to New York to get his master's degree from NYU. It was there that he had trouble finding a job, although qualified, until he met the family of the controller of Chase Manhattan Bank. He instantly received a job and worked there until his retirement.
