While at Camp Shelby, he would begin his work in the cadre, teaching discipline to the new Army recruits. They would be faced with a lot of restrictions and curfew, seeing a lot of prejudice throughout the process. His family would be evacuated and sent to Gila River Concentration Camp, losing almost all of their personal belongings and leaving the farm to a man that would end up stealing a lot of their produce.
