Description
An account of the resource
Yamasaki begins the interview talking about how his family came from Japan to Hawaii. As his parents were born in Hawaii, he was a sansei, and would speak very little Japanese at home. His father would help to get him into a private elite school, called Punahou School, which helped him get acquainted with a more diverse population than most Hawaiians. He would have some influence of Japanese culture from both his grandparents and the Japanese language school that he attended after regular school. Next, he talks about Pearl Harbor and how he came to join the Army after a year at the University of Hawaii. He would be inducted at Schofield Barracks before being sent to Mississippi to begin his basic training at Camp Shelby. There, he would train as a machine gunner for I Company until he was shipped out to Europe.

Description
An account of the resource
Leo Morishita gives a little fun fact about his last name Morishita. Morishita means underwood in English. Before his high school graduation, on December 7, Leo is at the Japanese American Citizen League (JACL) planning on an early Christmas party. The Sheriff advises everyone to go home for safety.
After the Pearl Harbor attack, there are some restrictions in place. One of them being curfew time. Leo's basketball coach has to get a permit for Leo to be out past curfew to participate in the basketball game. Later, President Truman signs Executive Order 9066 placing thousands of Japanese Americans into camp. Leo discusses the effects of EO9066 and his family in Salinas, California. Leo's family farm also is searched by the FBI.
Before volunteering for service, Leo attends Northern Montana College for a year. The Morishita family is proud of Kenzo, Leo, and Yukata for joining the Army. The Morishita brothers are inducted at Fort Douglas, Utah. Leo does don't leave at the same time with his brothers because of his feet. Leo joins Kenzo and Yutaka six weeks later at Camp Shelby.
At Camp Shelby, Leo does nine months of basic training, He describes the different training he learns and the discrimination in the South. Even though there is discrimination, there is one kind person Leo meets. He shares his story about Earl Finch and his acts of kindness towards the Nisei.
Overseas, Leo lands in Naples, Italy, and learns there is a need for riflemen. He is no longer a medic. Leo is given a browning automatic rifle.

Tsuda discusses meeting up with the 100th Infantry Battalion once arrived in Italy. He would be assigned to a rifle company, even though he was trained as a heavy weapons expert. After this, they would march to Anzio. While there, he would get his first taste of war, including burying dead German bodies and guarding occupied houses. Next, they would march to Belvedere, where they would attack the German lines from behind, taking many SS troops as prisoners. While this was happening, a German tank would also begin it's attack, but in the end, they would all be killed as well.

Miyamoto continues his recollection of growing up on Hilo, where his pidgin English was heavy and his normal English was inconsistent. After graduation from high school, he and his family would move to Kalihi on Oahu. It was there that he would see the attacks on Pearl Harbor, thinking that it was just a military maneuver. Shortly after, his uncle would be taken in by the FBI, until after joining the Army, Miyamoto would write a letter to the military government asking for his release. He would be transported to the mainland and taken to basic training at Camp Shelby, as part of the original 442nd Regiment. Next, he talks about his first combat experience, facing discrimination, and seeing his cousin who was fighting with the 100th Regiment.

Description
An account of the resource
Taba continues with his time after he had joined the Army. After taking a train to Mississippi, he would begin his basic training at Camp Shelby, learning to be an assistant machine gunner. While there, he would join the 100th Infantry Battalion and really see the segregation of the south first hand. Once his training was complete, he would then be shipped out, where he would meet the others in the 100th Battalion for the first time. The ship would convoy to North Africa where he would stay for about a month until shipping out to Italy. In Italy, Taba would be assigned to the Headquarters company and sent to a team that would be in charge of mine sweeping so that tanks could get through without harm. He explains that process and his experience when a stone wall crumbled and he was buried alive for about five minutes until someone was able to dig him out. Next, he talks about various other war experiences, including the various battles that he took part in.
