Kimura begins the interview giving an introduction of himself and his family background. He was born on the Hawaiian island of Kauai and was raised by a man he would know as his brother, though he was actually an uncle. He speaks about his childhood home and what it was like to grow up in Kauai. Much of his childhood would include playing sports like baseball and football, learning the fundamentals on the sugarcane fields. He would skip a few grades and complete his high school education at the age of 16, and he would work as a carpenter, living on his own in Waimea.

Kubota discusses harvesting pineapples and working at a bakery after high school graduation. On December 7, 1941 Kubota is teaching Sunday School when Pearl Harbor is bombed. He recalls the black armbands and combat troop recruitment. Kubota passes the physical exam and is sent to Schofield Barracks for three weeks before going to the Mainland. 10,500 volunteered from Hawaii to join the service. to fight in the war. Kubota recalls the the interaction between Mainland boys and Hawaiian boys in basic training. On the mainland, Kubota goes to Camp Shelby and is in L Company as a rifleman. Also Kubota experiences segregation on the mainland.

Yoshino begins the interview with his family background, being raised by his grandparents on Maui. Growing up on a plantation, he was quite the rascal, and would get into a lot of fights as a child, so he was taken in by the local boxing community and taught to fight the right way. He would also enjoy surfing and fishing at the local beaches. Next, he talks about his whereabouts during the Pearl Harbor attacks and how they were forced to paint their windows black, while many people he knew were taken into custody by the FBI. He would get a job at the PX, and then Red Hill before volunteering for the Army and getting his basic training at Camp Wolters in Texas. He would become involved with the boxing team and travel throughout the United States for exhibitions. Next, he talks about shipment to Le Havre and his good friend Ted Ohira.

After his language training and basic training, Kimura would ship out, heading first to Australia, where they would set up in tents and settle in at Camp Chelmer. There, he would join up with Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS) and get his first assignment as a translator in New Guinea and Bougainville. While in Bougainville, he would try to get captured documents and interrogate prisoners of war to gain as much information as possible. He tells a story that all officers, including generals had to respect the privacy of the interrogations and would have to ask permission to view them.
