Description
An account of the resource
Urata continues his recollection of his time in the Honouliuli Internment Camp in Hawaii as the war went on. He also speaks about how he got involved in Hole Hole Bushi music, which he later became famous for. Next, he goes back to his discussion on the living conditions of the internment camp in Honolulu and how the government was trying to close down the camp but the residents refused to leave. The government responded by sending them all out to the mainland, at Tule Lake concentration camp. Urata recalls the living conditions being worse than Hawaii and nearly applying for repatriation but was talked out of it by a close friend. As the end of the war occurred, Urata would end up in Minnesota, where his sister was residing, and became a teacher for the Military intelligence Service Language School. After a few months there, he would return to Hawaii and work as a translator for the Hawaii Hochi, then an advertising position on the radio, followed by a coffee salesman.

Description
An account of the resource
Shigeo Iwamasa is born November 12, 1923, in Waihee-Waiehu, Maui. Shigeo's father is an Issei from Yamaguchi Prefecture Japan, and his mother is from Hilo, Hawaii. Shigeo has five brothers and a sister.
Growing up, Shigeo has an active childhood. He works on the plantation with his father growing food, harvesting crops, school projects, and working part-time on the golf course as a caddie service. Although the Iwamasa family did not have a lot of money, Shigeo says they live an honorable life and are happy.
Shigeo reflects on the Pearl Harbor attack and the start of his Military Service. The process of enlisting happens quickly, and Shigeo regrets not telling his parents goodbye. Shigeo travels to the mainland and does basic training at Camp Shelby. At basic training, Shigeo makes friends with some of the mainland soldiers. One of his good friends is Shichizo Toyota. Shigeo discusses their friendship and the impact Shichizo makes on him.
After a year of basic training, Shigeo is shipped overseas to France. Overseas, Shigeo gets measles and is hospitalized. When Shigeo recovers, he receives orders to be a driver for a Major General.

An account of the resource
Oshiro begins the interview with a short introduction and talking about his whereabouts during the Japanese surrender during World War Two. Next, he talks about his childhood, growing up in Hawaii and being brought up with a heavy influence of Japanese culture, including Japanese language school every day after regular school. He would grow up on a pineapple plantation, often having nothing to eat and struggling for money. He would jump at the first chance he had to not work on the plantation, by joining the Army, after a recruiter told him about the GI Bill. He would head to Schofield Barracks in Honolulu on his first ever plane ride and have a very fast basic training, sending him over to Yokohama after just six weeks of training. Once he arrived in Japan, he would see the destruction that the war had caused and begin his second stint of training, learning conversational Japanese at the NYK building.

Description
An account of the resource
Barney Hajiro was born on September 16, 1916. He was the second oldest of his siblings. He grew up on a plantation in Maui, Hawaii, during the Great Depression.
During Barney's school years, he attended first through eighth grade. He did not have transportation to go to high school. Therefore, after the eighth grade, Barney worked on the plantation weeding the grass and irrigating the sugar crops.
Barney worked hard and never complained while working on the plantation. Later, he moved to Honolulu looking for a stevedore position but worked as a dishwasher instead. There were no opportunities for Asians to work as a stevedore.
In February 1942, Barney joined the Army and did not receive weapons training. Therefore he did not go overseas with the 100th. Barney stayed behind at Schofield and was part of the 1399 Engineer Construction Battalion. He left the 1399 to volunteer for the 442nd. Barney went to Camp Shelby, Mississippi for basic training. At Shelby, he was assigned to Company M, heavy weapons, as a runner and later transferred to Company I.
Barney fought in the Bruyeres and Biffontaine battles and later participated in the Lost Battalion rescue. He also fought in the Vosges Mountains against the German soldiers. He recalls his friends Fred Kameda and Shiro Kashino who were killed in action and that they were good soldiers.
Post-war, Barney returned to the plantation and worked as a supervisor. However, in 1946, there was a strike, and no one showed up for work. Later Barney goes back to Honolulu but could not find a job. The only positions available were stevedore or janitorial. Barney found work as a dishwasher because it was easier than plantation work.
Barney received the Medal of Honor for his service during World War Two but said the medal was not for himself but everyone in I Company.
