Jimmy Doi and Michael John Doi oral history interview, part 2 of 2, March 7, 2007
When Jimmy Doi was classified as an enemy alien, he found a job working at a defense plant. Then his status changed to 1A, he was sent to Camp Blanding. A few weeks later, Jimmy’s brother, Michael Doi, left Camp Blanding to go overseas.
At the end of 1944, Michael went overseas and landed in Naples, Italy. Michael was assigned to the 100th Battalion as a replacement and went to Marseille, France. Michael experiences his first attack in Bruyeres.
Michael describes Bruyeres and soldiers wounded from shrapnel or shell bursts. After Bruyeres and Biffontaine, Michael was in the Lost Battalion rescue. Many soldiers lost their lives in the Lost Battalion. According to Michael the most challenging part of the war was seeing the wounded soldiers. Michael remembers a close call and feeling lucky to survive the war. Jimmy also said the worst part of war is death. He recalls his friend being killed in action.
Overseas, Michael was a mortarman, and Jimmy was in Headquarters Company as a wireman. Michael and Jimmy agree the German weapons were advanced in contrast to the American weaponry.
Post-war, Jimmy reenlisted and asked to be stationed in Japan to see his parents. Later, Michael also went to Japan in 1969 to visit his mother. Michael and Jimmy discuss the Nisei legacy and the Nisei's contribution helped future generations in every aspect.
Michael is married to Jean and has two children, Janice and David. Michael and Jean also have grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jimmy and Alice have three children, Glenn, Nancy, and Mark, and four grandchildren. Jimmy wishes for children a good life and to be good citizens.

While in Bruyeres, Tsuji would be wounded in action and talks about the intricacies of that. He also talks about his time in Marseille and being able to take a pass to explore the local shops and find that the black market was alive and well. He would find newly packaged toothpaste at a local cosmetics shop and see off-branded cigarettes often. Next, he talks more about how he was wounded, being in the Vosges Mountains, he would be in his foxhole, when he felt a huge explosion behind him and his body flew through the air, losing sensation in the lower half of his body. At first fearing that he was decapitated, the feeling soon came back into his body and he would be moved off to get a surgical procedure done. He would be shipped back to the United States to be discharged, but talks about how he still has shrapnel in his body from that explosion.

Tsuji continues his recollection of Camp Shelby and being shipped overseas to Oran in North Africa. Spending two weeks there, his regiment awaited their shipment to Naples in Italy where they would begin their first day. Tsuji talks about getting to Naples and immediately seeing the hardships of war. Next, he talks about another war experience, this time getting stuck in the middle of combat on Hill 140. Once being relieved from this battle, Tsuji finds himself needing medical attention and unable to eat food, which he later finds out is hepatitis. Finally, he is able to re-join H company in Florence where the locals continue their lives as if there is no war at all.

After the campaigns in Italy, Tsuda's unit would move into Southern France, where they would be involved in more combat, including a mortar barrage that wounded him with shrapnel into his hip. He would head to the hospital and stay there for a short time before being sent back to the front lines. They would then begin the Champagne campaign, where Tsuda would dig foxholes for a couple of days instead of enjoying his rest and relaxation time. After this, they would continue on, taking heavy casualties while coming up one of the hills and getting artillery barrages. One battle was done in complete darkness and it wasn't until the morning that they were able to see the shadows of the German soldiers shooting at them.

Lillian Matsudaira oral history interview, part 3 of 3, August 25, 2007
When Lillian Matsudaira moves to Philadelphia, she works at an insurance company as a clerk. Lillian stays in Philadelphia for nine months before going to Cleveland. In 1945 Seattle reopens, and Lillian goes back home at the end of July.
Lillian's sister returns to their family home first. Lillian says when she returns home, she prepares the house for her parents' return from Minidoka. Later she learns about her family receiving death threats.
Lillian discusses John's family's homecoming from Minidoka. When they return home, there is nothing left, and they did not have money. Fortunately, the Matsudaira family receives assistance from Saint Vincent de Paul and other religious affiliations. John does not return home from the hospital until February 1947. John is wounded in Rome in October 1944 by shrapnel. John also receives threats as well after returning home from camp.
Lillian shares John's basic training and war experiences. In Mississippi, there is segregation. Either it is white or black. Japanese Americans are considered white. Lillian says the Asians are not treated as badly as the African Americans in the South.
Lillian feels proud of her husband John for serving during World War Two. She says their contribution liberated the Japanese Americans and shows that the Japanese Americans are good as anyone else. The 442nd opened opportunities for other Asians to have a chance to have a better life. She reflects on American history and the generational gaps between Nisei and Sansei.
Lillian and John have four children and seven grandchildren. She shares memories of her children and John's interests and hobbies.

Minamide discusses arriving in France right after the 442nd Regimental Combat Team rescues the Lost Battalion. He gets assign to L Company to go to Italy for the push with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Minamide recalls making foxholes and describes how they shield you from artillery fire. During wartime, Minamide is grateful for rest time. He says, there are essentials that are valuable to the soldiers such as hot showers, socks, water, and hot meals.
Reflecting back on wartime, Minamide feels the heroes of the war are the medics who helps the wounded. He recalls a time when a soldier is hurt and medic comes to assist the wounded in the middle of battle. When artillery fire is happening, Minamide says you can tell the difference between German and Untied States military gun fire. The German's is more rapid sounds and fact pace. At the end of the war, during the final push of the Gothic Line, Minamide discusses advancing the mountain and the war ending.

He explains the differences between artillery shells and mortar shells and how he was wounded in action by a mortar shell. Once wounded, he would make it off the battlefield and be sent to a hospital in Rome for an operation. However, once the doctor looked at the X-Ray, he decided that he could not get surgery and instead sent him back to the United States. His first reaction was that he didn't want to leave his friends that were fighting the war still but in the end would need to go back. He talks about war time experiences such as seeing a casualty for the first time and soldiers getting shell shock on the front lines.

Suehiro discusses his mindset during the war, which was readied by a letter written from his mother to not bring shame to his father. This got him to rid himself of cowardice and continue to push on during combat. He would experience this bravery during combat near the Mussolini Canal as artillery shells were landing all around him. He tells a heartbreaking story of a group of soldiers that were sent out during broad daylight by superiors, only to find them fifteen minutes later, all shot. He discusses the hardships of the soldiers and the good men that were lost, especially during the Lost Battalion. Suehiro talks more about combat and the details of the weapons that they and the German soldiers used. He also speaks about the camaraderie between soldiers, and seeing friends get wounded in action.
