Sumio Frank Shimada oral history interview, part 1 of 5, March 23, 2002
Sumio Frank Shimada was born on April 21, 1918, in Vacaville, CA. Later his family moved to Cordelia and then San Jose. Frank revisited Vacaville last year for a reunion. He described the changes in the town since his childhood.
Frank discusses his school years. In Vacaville, he attended primary school and Japanese Language School. Later, when the family moved to Cordelia, he went to a small grammar school and attended Sunday school at a Lutheran Church. After five years, Frank's family moved to San Jose. When Frank went overseas during wartime, he missed the valleys of San Jose the most. The valley was the most beautiful when the flowers were blooming.
In high school, Frank enrolled at a Prep Ministry school in Oakland. He graduated high school in 1936. Being the oldest son, Frank had responsibilities to the family. Therefore, he worked on the strawberry farm to help his parents. Later, Frank's family moved to Santa Clara and rented an area for farming.
In 1941, Frank moved to Los Angeles to help his half-brother in the trucking business. He recalls hearing the news about Pearl Harbor and shares his reaction to the event.
After President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, there were restrictions for the Japanese Americans. Frank's first reaction to Executive Order 9066 was the government could not do this to American citizens. He could only comply with the government orders because his parents taught him to respect authority.
Frank evacuated to Santa Anita Assembly Center with the Japanese Americans from Mountain View Palo Alto and later to Heart Mountain. Frank only took what he could carry to camp.

Oda talks about his career work after graduating from University of Hawaii with Pan-American Airlines. Next, he talks about the recreational activities he did as a child, including fishing and going to the movies. After getting married, he would settle down and start a family, that now includes grandchildren. After Pan-American Airlines shut down, he would retire and help underprivileged children with their swimming, teaching them to respect their competitors. He finishes with a message for future generations that you must respect your elders.

Oda discusses his time in Europe and the experiences he had while there. He discusses the religions he grew up with and being a boy scout for a short time and how that taught him to give respect to elders. Next, he talks about the things that were given to him before the war, such as a senninbari and sending home watches and other things for his family. He would also see Mussolini hanging after the war and talk about that experience. The war would end, and he would head back to Hawaii to continue his education at the University of Hawaii. He would graduate from college with a sociology major and also continue his swimming throughout his time there. After college, he would begin working at a pineapple cannery before joining Pan-American Airlines. While at the University of Hawaii, he would meet his wife.

Oda discusses his time in Mississippi, doing his basic training with the 442nd Regiment. There he would marvel at the amount of pine trees and the humidity of the South and would see the color segregation that was evident in the South. He would continue swimming in competitions for the Army, and would even get to compete while overseas in Europe. He also discusses the relationship between the Hawaiian and mainland soldiers. After his basic training, he would be shipped out to Naples, Italy and head up to Civitavecchia where the 442nd was in combat. Being part of the cannon company, Oda and his team didn't take part in much battle, though they would be constantly on the move through Europe. He discusses the black market and going to Bruyeres where the weather was cold and they had to watch for tree bursts. He also talks about how the Americans had inferior weapons, but the manpower was dominant.

Oda continues his recollection of his time with the 3 Year Swimming Club, in which they would get to travel throughout Hawaii and the United States for tournaments, and would be known as some of the best swimmers. It was thanks to this, that he would gain a scholarship for swimming at the University of Hawaii. Next, he talks about Pearl Harbor and seeing the smoke from afar at college, and thinking that it was just a training maneuver. He would find out shortly that it was the Japanese bombing Pearl harbor and would immediately head home. He then talks about Hung Wai Ching and the Varsity Victory Volunteers lobbying for an all-Japanese regiment, which would later become the 442nd Regiment. With encouragement from Ralph Yempuku, Oda would join the Army and head to Schofield Barracks before being sent to Camp Shelby to begin his basic training with H company and cannon company.

She would also correspond with her future husband, who was living on Kauai, while she attended McKinley High School. She would go to a lot of movies and get involved with music, starting with the violin and then playing the cello. After her high school years, she would attend business school, learning to be a receptionist and becoming valedictorian. After this, she talks about knowledge of the wars happening overseas and where she was during the attacks on Pearl Harbor. After the attacks, Hawaii would be put on curfew, and have to black out their car headlights and windows, even if just playing cards.
