Asato continues talking about his first combat while in Italy, at the Rome-Arno area. He talks about being able to see Florence from a distance and the tree bursts that could kill a soldier instantly. While there, he would get sick and end up in a hospital, joining instead, a chemical mortar company where he would be the only Japanese American in the unit. Soon after, he would hear of the end of the war while in Germany and head back to the United States. After stopping first in Boston and San Francisco, he would get back to Hawaii and get discharged at Fort Kamehameha. He would rest for a short time at home and do some labor work before heading back into the Army for the Korean War. He talks about the combat there, and moving up to sergeant first class, in charge of one of the squads. He would once again return to Hawaii, but this time with his wife, whom he met in Japan. He talks about his family, including children and grandchildren and talks about picking up some war artifacts before he came back, including a German helmet.

Janet Brown and Susan Hardwick oral history interview for William Hardwick, Part 2 of 2, September 11, 2007
Janet Brown Hardwick Brown is the oldest of the Hardwick sisters. She is married to Phil Brown and has three children and grandchildren. Susan Hardwick is the youngest sister and is a real estate agent for 30 years. The Hardwick sisters start a journey that leads them to learn about the 442nd and the heroes that save their father, Bill Hardwick of the 36th Infantry Regiment.
Susan Hardwick discusses that her father, Bill, did not take about the war experience often. She would hear the war stories from her mother. Bill has a lot of admiration and respect for the Japanese Americans. At a young age, Susan remembers her father would be saddened if he hears discriminative remarks about the Nisei veterans. Susan recalls a story about a Nisei veteran and a barbershop.
Janet Hardwick encourages anyone to serve their country if they have an opportunity no matter the situation. She feels we should be proud of the Nisei veterans because they opened the doorway for all Americans. Learn as much as you can about the Nisei legacy. Susan says because of her father, they are introduced to the 442nd. The 442nd embodies tolerance, respect, and gratitude that we should all have in the face of adversity.
Moreover, the Hardwick sister believes oral histories are a learning tool. Susan adds that oral histories are a continuous duty that all veterans should do after the war to keep the story alive.

Ray Wells oral history interview, part 3 of 4, September 8, 2007
Ray Wells's interview is combined with Julian Quayles
Julian Quayles discusses what happens after he escapes from the German soldiers. Julian with another Officer, finds shelter on an Italian civilian's property until they can rejoin the American lines. Julian does not reunite with the American troops until mid-October.
Ray Wells and his Company are training until their next action. They move to Mount Rotondo. Ray discusses the attitudes of the civilians. Food is scarce during the wartimes.
At Mount Rotondo, everyone in Ray's squad is hit by artillery fire. Ray is hospitalized for several weeks. During his recovery, he meets General MacArthur and Hideichi Shimabukuro from the 100th.
When Ray receives news about his brother, he goes AWOL but returns to the frontlines. After recovery, Ray attaches himself to G Company (rifle company) and goes to San Pietro, Italy.
During this time, Julian and his troops are in Monte Cassino. After Monte Cassino, Julian is Battalion S3 (Plans and Training Officer). He is promoted a few more times throughout the European Theater when the higher officers are killed in action.
Even though there are many losses of soldiers from combat, Julian says the morale remains the same. Replacements are brought in to help with the men killed in action or wounded in action.
In Rome, Julian remembers there is a lot of marching. The Germans have set up a few diversions for the American soldiers such as roadblocks and Middle Eastern soldiers to help on the ground. Julian recalls before Monte Cassino, he is sitting on the mountain and watching two British Army soldiers.
Both Ray and Julian discuss the German weapons, mines, and observations planes.

Oda discusses his time in Mississippi, doing his basic training with the 442nd Regiment. There he would marvel at the amount of pine trees and the humidity of the South and would see the color segregation that was evident in the South. He would continue swimming in competitions for the Army, and would even get to compete while overseas in Europe. He also discusses the relationship between the Hawaiian and mainland soldiers. After his basic training, he would be shipped out to Naples, Italy and head up to Civitavecchia where the 442nd was in combat. Being part of the cannon company, Oda and his team didn't take part in much battle, though they would be constantly on the move through Europe. He discusses the black market and going to Bruyeres where the weather was cold and they had to watch for tree bursts. He also talks about how the Americans had inferior weapons, but the manpower was dominant.

Tsuda continues his recollection of his experiences overseas including getting trench foot and dealing with cold weather. He next talks about the various campaigns he was involved with including Bruyeres and the experience of liberating that area. During his time in Europe, he would also end up getting wounded in action, getting shrapnel in his face. He would head to the 92nd Division hospital but was denied entrance, so he would head to a rest camp instead. While there, the 442nd would continue their push through the Gothic Line, which spelled the end of the war for Germany. He would go on a pass to Switzerland before being sent home. After arriving in New York, he would take a plane to Camp Beale where he would get discharged.

He would head back home to Kauai, where he would be reunited with his grandmother. We would enjoy the 52-20 club before getting into his career as an electrician and also working with birds. He finishes with a message for future generations that you must give credit to those soldiers that went into the war and put their life on the line, even if they never shot a single bullet.

Takahashi talks more about his war experiences in Europe. He discusses the Gothic Line campaign as a walkie talkie man, and shooting his first bullet in Carrara. There, he would see the brutalities of war, seeing one of his best friends get killed and his sergeant captured by the Germans. After that, he would go to Lake Como, where they would learn of the Germans surrendering and that would spell the end of the war in Europe. He would continue to stay in Europe for a short amount of time, guarding prisoners of war until finally returning to the United States. Once discharged, he would open a restaurant for about 10 years, before working for the post office. He also discusses facing discrimination after the war, including seeing "No Japs" signs.

Hinatsu would arrive in Naples after a long journey across the ocean. He talks about his war experiences and route that the unit took while in combat. First, he talks about going through Civitavecchia and Sasseta, stopping at Hill 140, where the 442nd took heavy casualties. Throughout the war, he would be assigned to set wire down to help with communications at the front line. He also talks about the shelling that the German soldiers shot at them, including a close call that threw Hinatsu out of a trench, leaving him shaking with fear. Next, they would head through Bruyeres and the Vosges Mountains, where they would face tree bursts and rescue the Lost Battalion.

Tommy Nishioka oral history interview, part 5 of 7, June 21, 2000
Nishioka talks more about his combat experiences in Sassetta, where the regiment would be involved in heavy house-to-house combat. He explains the differences between artillery shells and mortar shells and how he was wounded in action by a mortar shell. Once wounded, he would make it off the battlefield and be sent to a hospital in Rome for an operation. However, once the doctor looked at the X-Ray, he decided that he could not get surgery and instead sent him back to the United States. His first reaction was that he didn't want to leave his friends that were fighting the war still but in the end would need to go back. He talks about war time experiences such as seeing a casualty for the first time and soldiers getting shell shock on the front lines.
