He would attend his basic training at Camp Landing in Florida, where he would be trained as an infantryman until being chosen to switch over to the Military Intelligence Service in Minnesota. He would report to Fort Snelling, where he would take Japanese language courses for the occupation of Japan. They would prepare to invade Japan, but as the war ended, they were needed instead for occupation work. After shipment, he would land in Yokohama, and receive assignments in both Sasebo and Kumamoto. Though the work was limited, he would get to experience many different things, such as befriending the Japanese yakuza, visiting family and helping children at an orphanage. Next, he talks about the importance of the Nisei linguists to the reconstruction of the country.

Tommy Mayekawa oral history interview, part 2 of 3, February 11, 2012
Tommy Mayekawa and his family evacuate to Santa Anita Assembly Center after receiving the evacuation orders. He describes the living conditions and life in the camp. Tommy and his family live in a horse stable, and his parents accepted the situation with the attitude of shikata ga nai.
Tommy and his family are at Santa Anita for a few months before going to Rohwer Relocation Center. At Rohwer, there are armed guards in guard towers. Tommy tries to try to occupy his time in camp with work. He finds a job driving a truck and chopping wood.
In March 1944, Tommy leaves Rohwer for employment opportunities in Detroit, MI. Shortly after, Tommy receives his draft notice and reports to Fort Sheridan. Tommy discusses the irony of being an American citizen going to camp and now being drafted into service.
At Camp Blanding, Tommy is part of a segregated unit. Many guys from his Company go overseas to Europe, but Tommy goes to language school at Fort Snelling. Tommy's training is short because the war has ended, and they are needed overseas.
In August 1945, he travels to the Philippine Islands and works at a POW camp. Later, Tommy goes to Japan for occupation. He is stationed in downtown Yokohama and is attached to the Third Military Railway Service Headquarters. His assignment is to be an interpreter with the local rail operators.

George Matsunaga oral history interview, part 3 of 3, October 9, 2010
During the occupation, George Mitsuru Matsunaga stayed with the CIC. He recalled a food shortage in Japan and saw the Japanese nationals trying to survive. During George's travel, he became friends with three Marines who fought in the Guadalcanal on a transport ship from Hawaii to the Mainland. A year later, George saw his Marines friends again.
George was sent home early from the occupation and went to Schofield. He was at Schofield for six months and was assigned to the motor pool as a dispatcher. At the end of George's service, his rank was Corporal.
George continued his education at the University of Hawaii. After graduation, George could not find a job. Later, Thomas Yoshida told George about the job in Okinawa as a Court interpreter working for the Department of Army Civilians.
George worked for the Department of Army Civilian for approximately a year, interpreting, collecting property records in Naha, and coordinating workers for repairing a 90-foot boat.
When George's one-year contract ended, he came home to Hawaii. He worked serval jobs before working at the State Tax Office as a tax auditor for 23 years. In George's retirement years and he stayed active with golf. He and his wife have six children, four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
George reflects on the occupation and the Nisei linguists and their contributions. In George's opinion, he felt the Nisei linguists were the bridge between the United States Army and the Japanese nationals. Although the occupation was successful in helping Japan to rebuild, George felt the main point is to treat the people well with respect. George hopes for his grandchildren and great-grandkids to have a good education, a good job, and marry into a fine family. His message for future generations is to be kind to one another and treat them as human beings.

Oda continues his recollection of his time with the 3 Year Swimming Club, in which they would get to travel throughout Hawaii and the United States for tournaments, and would be known as some of the best swimmers. It was thanks to this, that he would gain a scholarship for swimming at the University of Hawaii. Next, he talks about Pearl Harbor and seeing the smoke from afar at college, and thinking that it was just a training maneuver. He would find out shortly that it was the Japanese bombing Pearl harbor and would immediately head home. He then talks about Hung Wai Ching and the Varsity Victory Volunteers lobbying for an all-Japanese regiment, which would later become the 442nd Regiment. With encouragement from Ralph Yempuku, Oda would join the Army and head to Schofield Barracks before being sent to Camp Shelby to begin his basic training with H company and cannon company.

He talks about his war experiences, including the German weapons and shelling, and following orders through the Arno River. He also talks about getting to Marseille, where they would get their first replacements and getting wounded right before the Lost Battalion campaign. Due to a tree burst, he would get shrapnel in three parts of his leg and would immediately walk to the aid station, where they would fly him back to Naples. Next, he talks about seeing casualties and finding out that his brother was in K company.
