Description
An account of the resource
Henry Gary Shiota's primary duty is to work on the war crime trials at Sugamo Prison. He discusses war crime trials in Japan and the atrocities in the Philippines and Dutch East Indies.
On Gary's days off, he visits Tokyo and relatives who live in the suburbs. The benefits of being fluent in Japanese helps Gary communicate with the locals and become familiar with them. Gary enjoys sightseeing and eating the local food.
After a year in Tokyo, Gary returns to the United States. He decides to further his education and studies at International Trade in Chicago, IL. After finishing school, Gary wants to return to Asia. However, he meets his Issei wife and gets married in 1974. They have one daughter.
Gary moves to Sacramento and works for the University of California for 23 years before retiring. In Gary's retirement years, he is active with the Nisei Veterans Group. He goes to various schools to discuss his war and camp experiences.
Gary's message for future generations is not to be silent and stand up for what is right. Sus (Gary's friend) briefly discusses the Hanashi Oral History Foundation and its mission.

Muranaka goes through his work in the Army after the end of World War Two, where he served in the Korean War. Next, he discusses the importance of Nisei soldiers during the occupation of Japan, and how big of an impact communication is in order to keep everyone on the same page. With many differences in culture, language and upbringing, Muranaka worked hard to make Japanese soldiers feel at ease while interrogating them. As many Nisei soldiers were also doing similar work, it became key to have skilled linguists in occupied Japan.

Description
An account of the resource
Sato continues his recollection of being an interpreter and interrogator in the Philippines. When arriving there, he would immediately notice the devastation and flatness that the war had caused. He talks about the children there seeing Japanese American soldiers but thinking they were Japanese soldiers. He would be involved with the war crimes trials, interrogating witnesses. Sato discusses various important people during the war, including a teacher from Hawaii and a spy for the American Army. After the Philippines, he would head back to Tokyo to get his discharge from the Army, but stayed around and would take a job interpreting and interrogating as a civil servant. He would also be involved with the Korean War as a civil servant, interrogating Korean soldiers that spoke Japanese. Then, due to the GI Bill, he would head back to Hawaii to begin college at the University of Hawaii. After this, he gives a background of his wife's family and how they came to meet.

Description
An account of the resource
Hitoshi G. Sameshima describes the process of the war crime trials in Japan. Hitoshi feels the good interpreters are the ones who have been to college in Japan and the United States. Some interpreters and instructors are Kibei. Hitoshi recalls a couple of cases of misinterpretations of double negative questions and the different dialects of Japan. Otherwise, Hitoshi says the Military Intelligence Service (MIS) did well at interpreting.
Hitoshi says he works with an FBI agent, Dr. Miller, a professor at Syracuse University, on Captain Murakami's case. If Captain Murakami pleads guilty, the sentence would be lighter. However, that is a mistake. Hitoshi says Captain Murakami receives a 30-year sentence.
Hitoshi works with another FBI agent, Captain Peters. Hitoshi says war crimes go along with war. As long as you treat the POWs in a humane way, there will no be war crime cases. Hitoshi explains the Geneva Conference is a universal guideline on how to treat POWs. However, in Hitoshi's opinion avoiding war is better because he lost all his childhood friends in World War Two. War is not worth it.
Hitoshi corresponds with his parents and they ask him to visit their relatives. Hitoshi recalls meeting his relatives. He says the meeting is awkward because he is Japanese but wearing an American Army uniform. Looking at Japan, the cities are destroyed by the bombing and there are food shortages.
Hitoshi is discharged in October 1946 and stays in Japan to work as a civilian. Hitoshi gets married to Utako before returning to the United States.

An account of the resource
Hitoshi G. Sameshima discusses his training to be an interrogator at Fort Snelling. After completing his training, he goes to Fort Spellman and goes overseas to the Philippines. Hitoshi stays in Manila and Luzon to interview the Prisoners of War for a month before going to Japan.
In the interrogation, there is only Hitoshi and the interviewee. He tries to make the interrogation informal for the interviewee to feel at ease. There are many POW camps in the Philippines, and Hitoshi is not able to visit them.
Hitoshi's first interview with the Prisoner of War (POW) is with a sailor. The sailor is about a year older than Hitoshi and did not want to talk. Therefore Hitoshi uses psychological warfare to try to interrogate the POW.
Hitoshi learns about psychological warfare at Fort Snelling. Hitoshi also takes psychology in college "shinri-gaku." In the interrogation with the Japanese sailor (POW), Hitoshi explains being a Japanese American in the US Army. However, it is difficult for the Japanese sailor to understand how Hitoshi can be Japanese with no Japanese ties. Hitoshi also shares his interrogation experience with a businessman (POW).
Hitoshi says the treatment of the POWs is good in the US POW Camp. Hitoshi recalls a War Crime interview with Major Phillips. They interviewed a sailor from a mini-submarine (from Pearl Harbor). The objective of the interview is to see if he experienced any mistreatment in the US POW Camp. The POW is happy the war is ended.

Matsui continues stories from occupied Japan, including talking with desperate civilians trying to sell things on the black market. He would also help with the war crimes trials as an investigator with the 8th Army Judge Advocate section. His assignment would be to get statements from various witnesses as a part of the defense. He talks more about the trials, ending up working on around 25 different cases during his time there. Next, he talks about visiting his parents that were living in Kyushu during one of his furloughs and what it was like to see them and hear about news of other family members. He would then return to the United States, where he would go back to college and end up working for Mitsubishi as a deputy branch manager.

He talks about being in combat and getting a hand injury, causing him to leave and head to a field hospital. There, he begged for an operation which was granted to him, otherwise he may have died that night. He would stay there until the end of the war, being discharged and pursuing a psychology degree at the University of Chicago. He would then be accepted into a PhD program at the University of Tokyo, taking a heavy interest in Buddhism. It was there, that he would also have interactions with the War Crimes Trials and with General Hideki Tojo. After this, he speaks about his marriage and family background and being a professor. Finally, he discusses buddhism as a religion and if he would have joined the Army if he had studied Buddhism earlier in life.

Description
An account of the resource
Ito discusses the aftermath of Pearl Harbor and the pressures of war hysteria. It was during this time that he was drafted into the Army and selected for Military Intelligence Service (MIS). He was sent to Fort Snelling to take Japanese language courses, spending hours at a time studying after class ended. Next, he was sent to Fort McClellan in Alabama, where he would experience the discrimination and segregation of black civilians and soldiers. After that, he would be sent back to Fort Snelling before being shipped overseas to begin interpreting in Philippines. Once he arrived in Manila, he immediately noticed the stark poverty throughout the city and was even told to not feed the civilians. He would begin his work, and would be put on assignment to interpret the war crimes trials, including cases such as General Yamashita and General Homma. From there, Ito would be transferred to Japan.

He would report to Fort Snelling and be placed in the advanced class, where after just six months, he would be shipped out to Manila to begin his assignment translating and interpreting. Description
An account of the resource
After receiving his training in Minnesota, Yoshiaki Fujitani was sent to Camp Richie to work in the Pacific Military Intelligence Service Research Section (PACMIRS), where he translated captured Japanese documents. When the war ended, he was sent overseas to Tokyo, Japan, where he worked at the Allied Translators and Interpreters Section (ATIS). He describes how the people in Japan begged the American soldiers for food -- he gave one man a box of Almond Rocas. Before returning to the United States, his cousin - who served in the Japanese Army - gave him his Samurai sword, since as an American soldier, he was part of the conquering forces.
