Akiyama talks about growing up in the Pacific Northwest and moving as a child to eastern Oregon, Portland, and Seattle. He then talks about his father and his employment as a cook; discusses his favorite dishes his father cooked; and talks about attending school. Next, Akiyama talks about recreational activities as a child such as going to the movies, playing marbles, and playing with his friends. Lastly, Akiyama talks about his mother and her occupation as a dance and shamisen teacher; attending Japanese language school; learning about Japanese culture and food; and values he learned from his parents.
