Murakami begins the interview talking about her family background, which begins in Okinawa. After marriage, the family moved to Los Angeles where Mary was born and they began their life as Christians in Little Tokyo. During this time, her father would watch over boarding houses and sell alcohol, even though it was Prohibition in the United States. She goes on to talk about her mother and siblings and some of the cherished moments she remembers with them. Next, they moved up to San Francisco, where Murakami would begin her schooling.
