Description

Rudy Tokiwa was inducted into the military at Fort Douglass in Utah. He was then sent to report to Camp Shelby, Mississippi, but spent a layover in New Orleans for four days. His Japanese language skills were tested at Fort Snelling, but he pretended he didn't know any Japanese, and was sent to Camp Shelby to join the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. He describes what his basic training was like at Camp Shelby. A few days before being shipped overseas, he and a few other 442nd recruits took part in a fight at a social dance in Newport News, Virginia.
