Description

In this segment, Takemoto describes his family background and life prior to the onset of the Second World War. His parents were Niseis who did not have a strong connection to Japan. While working for the Hilo Electric Light Company, Takemoto voluntarily enlisted for the Army without consulting with his parents leading to a short-lived feud. He played baseball in his school-aged years, but claims that he was disallowed to play with other Japanese American soldiers in the Army because he was not from Honolulu.
