Description
Takemoto describes induction into military after being prohibited from serving as a 4-F classification. Related, he describes the blacked out branches of the armed forces that were unavailable to Japanese American soldiers like the Air Force and Navy. He talks about the emotional farewells to family before leaving for Schofield Barracks which he was grateful for not knowing what would be the fate of his military service. He then details playing craps and scenes of gambling on the ships and mess halls while in the service. He also describes a stop in New York City on furlough where fellow troops got in trouble for rowdy behavior. He is asked to participate in the invasion of Japan due to his language skills, but declines, preferring to return to Europe aware of the more brutal combat in the Pacific theater.
