Description

Hayashi recalls his thoughts on the ship from Hawaii to the mainland, unsure of where he was going and the nature of his military assignment. Arriving first at Camp McCoy in Wisconsin, he later was sent to Camp Shelby, where he underwent more basic training. The majority of the second half of the interview describes his trip to North Africa and later Salerno, Italy. Hayahsi discusses the combat he saw with his battalion on his first few days after landing in Italy.
